Report: Vick to be an Eagle

By MARCUS K. GARNER

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Vick will return to the NFL after two seasons away, including 23 months in federal prison, and a league suspension that will end after Week 6 this year.

The Falcons host the Eagles in a Sunday game on Dec. 6, at the end of the regular season.

The controversial signal caller has gone through a whirlwind of highs and lows since the Atlanta Falcons drafted as the No. 1 pick in 2001.

He inked a $62 million deal that included a $15 million signing bonus. After a year waiting in the wings, took over the starting position in the 2002 season, and led the team to its first playoff berth since the 1998 NFC Championship season.

Sports watchers, at the time were calling Vick the most athletic player in the league, and comparing him to Gayle Sayers and O.J. Simpson in their heydays.

A broken ankle in 2003 shortened his season and stifled the team’s momentum. And head coach Dan Reeves paid the price, losing his job.

The following year Vick gained more ground yardage than any quarterback in league history, leading the Falcons’ to the NFC title game where they would lose to the Philadelphia Eagles.

His performance for the 2004 season netted him a second career season of MVP talks and a record $130 million contract.

But off-field drama seemed to plague the Falcons star from that point as his performance on the field waned.

First there was the 2005 lawsuit from a woman claiming Vick knowingly gave her herpes, and that he went to test for the virus under the pseudonym “Ron Mexico.”

During a rough 2006 season, after a home loss to New Orleans, Vick lost his cool and flipped off fans he said were taunting him and teammates.

And in 2007, he was stopped by security officials in a Miami airport carrying a water bottle with a hidden compartment, and allegedly smelling of an illegal substance.

And in 2008, Vick was indicted for financing an illegal dogfighting ring from a home he owned in Virginia, leading to and 18-month prison sentence and suspension from the league.

Riff sure is quick on the draw.

It's a good scenario for all involved. Vick will be able to get back in football shape without having to worry about being the man on the team--and as has been stated, a WildDawg backfield with Vick is a scary thought--and he'll get a chance to show whether or not he has been rehabilitated and can be a good citizen again.

Dennis

Why do I get the feeling that Tony Dungy will resurface as a head coach about the same time Vick's contract runs out in Philly?

So......

Philadelphia you say? Now there's an UNDERSTANDING fanbase. This is gonna be like an extended Saturday Night Live show. You just know some squid in charge of the stadium music is gonna amp up that tune "Who Let the Dawgs Out" as Michael Vick takes the field.

If they booed McNabb on draft day - what do you suppose was the most popular word in Philly today?

I think its actually going to be a very good thing for the eagles, lets face it mcnabb is getting into the back 9 of his career so why not begin training his replacement. Mike Vick is a more then capable replacement.

LOL....more than capable replacement? What the hell has Vick ever accomplished as a QB? He was never a real QB and his legs aren't going to serve him as well as he gets older and has to deal with the Philly weather late in the season.

Well the way I see it he never really had anyone teach him the right way, and with his skill set there is no one better then Andy Reid.

Andy Reid is a "good teacher?" Ask any Eagle fan how they feel about him. He's like a white Romeo Crennel.

Badly played, mz the pussy, given the fact that the Eagles have been a playoff team for several years--even though that is probably as much a tribute to Childress and Jim Johnson as it is to Reid.

A far better snarky comment would have been to point out that if anyone has shown the ability to keep young men out of trouble, it's Andy Reid.

You are correct, Dennis. I should have played the kids-on-herion card, but I've seen a lot of Reid (the wife is an Eagles fan) and had to go right for his coaching. I'm guessing his Crennelian clock management has cost the Eagles at least one Super Bowl.

The dog killer is going to the Eagles, which is a heck of a lot better than him coming to the Steelers. There was just no way that was going to happen. The Rooneys aren't into convicted felons. Their team doesn't need the sort of distraction that Vick would cause.

Philadelphia can have Vick. It deserves him.

The only regret? Vick didn't sign with Cleveland.

Except Romeo Crennel never took his team to the Superbowl as a head coach. Nor were his teams ever even REMOTELY close to being the perennial division contenders/playoff teams that the Eagles have been.

Bad comparison.
