Browns Board Madness 2021

Sweet  16 is set.   Some interesting notes:

A.  West Coast basketball may have been seriously underrated.  5 of the 16 teams are from West coast states:    Oregon St.,  Oregon, USC, UCLA, Gonzaga  (located in Spokane Wash)

B. Oregon St.   Oral Roberts,  Syracuse, UCLA   are all  10+  seeds to make it.    And that does not include Loyola  Ill.....which is an 8th seed.

C.  Conference breakdown for Sweet 16:   Pac 12 :   4 teams.  SEC  2 teams,  ACC  2 teams,  Big East  2 teams,  Big 10  1 team,  Big 12  1 team,    and American ,  West Coast, Summit, Missouri Valley each with 1 team.

D.  The following  Sweet 16 teams have previously won NCAA Basketball Championships:   UCLA,  Michigan, Syracuse, Arkansas, Villanova...and, yes, Loyola Illinois who won the championship in 1963.....and Oregon...who won the very first NCAA Basketball Championship back in like 1936 (beating Ohio St.).

E.  Two teams are tied with having made the most Final Fours without having  won the Championship:  one is Illinois (a #1 seed this year who was beaten)  and...Houston, a #2 seed this year....who seemingly has the "easiest" road to make it to the Final Four in that the remaining teams in their bracket are the  #8, 11, and 12 seeds. Houston's last trip to the Final Four was with the Phi Slamma Jamma group with  Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

F.  Alabama could pull of the rare feat of winning both the National Championship in College Football and Basketball in the same school year.    Only Florida in the 2006/07 school year has accomplished this feat.   A  commonality between the two:  Florida beat Ohio State in both title games, and Alabama beat OSU in this years football title game

Houston makes the Final Four.     They have been there  5 times previously:   1967/68   with Elvin Hayes   1982/83/84  with   Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.   They lost  the title game in   83/84.   In  1983 it was the big upset  of them by Jim Valvano and NC St.    In 1984 they lost to the favored  Georgetown Hoyas  in perhaps the greatest Big Man matchup ever in the title game:  Patrick Ewing  vs.  Akeem.

Houston  has been to the  Final Four  5 times previously and never won the title.   That is more than any other team in history....tied with Illinois.  If they don't win, they will hold that record alone.

Baylor is leading the other game at halftime.   If they hold on to win it will be the first time in history that  two teams from Texas will have made the Final Four in the same year.

FYI,  here are the years in which  2 teams from the same state made the Final Four:

1954  LaSalle and Penn St

1960  Ohio State and Cincinnati

1961 Ohio St. and Cincinnati

1962  Ohio St. and Cincinnati

1975  Kentucky and Louisville

1977  North Carolina and UNC  Charlotte

2012  Kentucky and Louisville

And maybe this year....a half to go for Texas to do it .   And technically  tomorrow,  2 teams from a 2d  same state/same city could make it if UCLA and USC both pull upsets.

Edit:  Done deal,    Baylor and Houston both make  Final Four.

It is also the first time Baylor has made the Final  Four in 71 years:    since 1950.
