What are the rules? If someone is cut by another team do you have to sign him to your active roster or can you sign him to the practice squad if you are low team on the totem pole? Is he essentially a free agent?

Guys with only a few years in the league first go through the waiver process; if you claim a guy then, he has to go on your 53 man roster.

However, if no one claims him, you can then sign him to your practice squad. Technically, you have just as much an opportunity to sign him as the team who cut him, but guys tend to prefer to stick with the team they were with in camp.

But in some cases, a guy is so offended at being cut that he declines an offer to join that team's p-squad, instead signing elsewhere. Former FSU LB Buster Davis did that a few years ago when the Cardinals cut him.

I simply don't get the obsession with Russell. Dude was frozen yogurt, at best.

You know, a suitable proxy in a pinch, but far from the real thing.

Yeah, but when he was in the game, our secondary was usually where it was supposed to be. No blown assignments. No sweeps getting around the corner. No wide open middles for draws to blow up into. No safeties not covering the over for tight cover corners.

So maybe he hasn't the physical skills to stack up at this level... but he has the smarts for it.

Got to think this roster is far from a done deal. Some of the 52 shouldn't be get real comfortable just yet. Once they see the cuts and also look at the waiver wire. It could get interesting. Anyone claimed off of waivers has to go on the 53 man roster. From what I saw, the Lions are at 53.

The Patriots released TE Alex Smith, just months after trading a fifth-round draft pick to the Buccaneers for his services.

Smith, a fifth-year NFL veteran, was the loser in a crowded tight end group that includes Chris Baker and Ben Watson. The Patriots also traded TE David Thomas to the Saints for a 2011 undisclosed draft pick, then appeared to spin that selection to the Giants in exchange for TE Michael Matthews

The Panthers claimed Sutton off waivers, a somewhat surprising move considering Carolina has a similar player in rookie Mike Goodson.

But it's no surprise Sutton was claimed after all the impressive reviews he gathered in practice and the solid work he did throughout the preseason. An undrafted rookie from Northwestern, Sutton could be a useful player on passing downs with his jitterbug style.
