When the glaciers do not calve right when the glacier gets into the ocean, than waves can start to hollow out the bottom of the glaciers. If the waves hollow the glaciers enough the waves can cause the glacier to calve. The waves can also make the cracks more weak, and the cracks will then break and calve.
