Biden signs $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill into law (cnbc.com)

President Joe Biden signed the more than $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill into law on Monday, checking off the first piece of his party’s sprawling economic agenda.

The package will put $550 billion in new funds into transportation, broadband and utilities. Biden’s signature follows years of failed efforts in Washington to overhaul physical infrastructure, improvements that advocates have said will boost the economy and create jobs.

The legislation will put $110 billion into roads, bridges and other major projects. It will invest $66 billion in freight and passenger rail, including potential upgrades to Amtrak. It will direct $39 billion into public transit systems.

The plan will put $65 billion into expanding broadband, a priority after the coronavirus pandemic left millions of Americans at home without effective internet access. It will also put $55 billion into improving water systems and replacing lead pipes.

Funding will go out over a five-year period. It could take months or years for many major projects to start.

Let’s take a peek at Amtrak service from CLE to Tampa Florida. The reason I’m using this comparison is because I’m traveling to Florida in a couple of weeks, and my trip is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes by air. (my trip also costs less)

So here’s the screeny from the Amtrak website showing 34 or 37 hours for the same trip to Tampa. Of course if you need me to explain anything about this trip go right ahead and ask. I’m used to explaining stuff to stoopid Democrats.

In the mid-90s l took Amtrak from Cincy to Washington DC. It was a neat experience, but definitely not the most efficient way to travel. If l remember correctly it took twice as long to get there by train than it would have to drive. We quickly discovered why during the trip as there were lots of pit stops in smaller towns on the way, and there wasn’t a ton of stretches that were long and straight to where the train could pick up speed.

Definitely scenic though. It took us through some neat stretches of Appalachia and followed the New River in WV for quite a few miles. 

I think we’re just too big of a country for rail to be a viable travel option, but there’s probably parts of the country it could be better utilized, like in the east coast where the population is denser and cities are closer together.

There was talk a while back of building the “Triple C”, which was supposed to be a high speed train that connected Cincy, Columbus and Cleveland. Intriguing idea but l don’t think it had near enough support to become reality.

I used to tell phone solicitors calling from some phony organization with names like like the blank blank of sheriff's police military blank that if they would mail me a list of their expenses and payouts I would send them $10. Usually the minimum wage grunt working the phones would get angry but one organization did. I forget who but I sent them the ten bucks because I promised I would. It was pretty funny the actual amount the charity gave to whatever group of bums they were supporting was tiny and there were expenses including automobiles entertainment Etc and other administrative costs totaling well over 95%.

Not being gouged by ridiculous Union demands and very little attention paid to regulation puts them ahead of the United States.
