The Browns waived 18 players and terminated the contracts of five others: DB Hamza Abdullah, RB Noah Herron, DB Corey Ivy, WR David Patten and TE Aaron Walker. Waived were FB Charles Ali, DB Brandon Anderson, QB Richard Bartel, DB Tra Battle, LB Beau Bell, OL Branndon Braxton, LB Titus Brown, OL Dustin Fry, DL Adam Hoppel, WR Paul Hubbard, RB Chris Jennings, WR Lance Leggett, OL Pat Murray, WR Jordan Norwood, OL Kurt Quarterman, DL Brian Schaefering, OL Isaac Sowells and DL Santonio Thomas. Hubbard was already on the Practice Squad once, and was on the roster last year... not sure he's allowed to be on the practice squad anymore? Further... they have a roster spot open. They'll sign him or Hubbard to the practice squad.....................but I don't think both. But, I also can't see them staying with 4 TE's.............something could be up there. If he makes the team and averages under 3 yards a carry - it's really not going to help us. I know some people thinking he's still the same back ready for 2000 yards but then there's those that have watched him struggle to reach the holes before they close this preseason The RB that loses the step or two or three isn't one with upside. He's running too upright and it's taking him an eternity to reach the line of scrimmage. He looks better on the screen passes but who hasn't? As I commented in the Mary Kay post - I would have had mixed feelings if he got cut. It sounded like he's been a tremendous help to James Davis. Understanding that, he also took Harrison under his wing conditioning last year. That's the part that gives me the warm fuzzies about leadership and attitude. That said, I don't want him turning into Trent Doofus with his unwillingness to accept the demotion if one is coming. Make sense? Bottom line: the barometer in our division is set at Baltimore and Pittsburgh convenient or not. Lewis couldn't make either one of those teams at RB right now. I think him making the team says we're emaciated at the RB depth. That's HOW you sign a RB released by his last Canadian Football Team. Doesn't mean Lewis rocked the house by any means. Me agrees with Riff and even those columnists that think we need to sign a young back capable of upside. If James Davis goes down to injury we're pretty much FUBAR. - Tom F. I don't understand keeping 10 backers, especially Leon Williams. One thing is for sure, Mangie loves special teams guys. Who the hell is Corey Hilliard? The Ike Sowells reign is over with. I'm also a little concerned about Ali being cut, he was a pretty solid backup. They obviously decided to go with youth in the defensive backfield by keeping Lockett, Francies and Lawson. Poteat can play both corner and safety and Sorenson is a staple at ST's. It was smart to bring in Hood and Ivy but there were no injuries and the kids showed more. They have to bring in another lineman because Hadnot is not ready to play yet. Bartel clearly was better than Ratliff all camp long, but does it really matter? Maybe Mangie is not totally the best player wins the competition huh? It would look silly to cut Ratliff for a guy named Bartel after trading for him. As for the backs I'd like to see them go after Tyrell Sutton and stash both him and Jennings on the practice squad along with Walker and possibly Leggett. Having only 3 backs and one FB makes it pretty thin, especially if a couple of injuries hit fast. It would be nice to have a couple backs on the PS that know the system. When you think about what he'll earn this year counting his roster bonus - he's prolly outearning every one of our coaches except Mangini. If all he's going to stick around for is coaching the younger guys - it makes sense to compare his earnings with others doing that. I watch this guy try to get it going and my first impression is "ouch." This guy looks like his body is telling him it doesn't want to run anymore but the competitive athlete in him is fighting the signals. I'm just trying to be honest about what I'm seeing. If the PLAYERS want free agency in this era they gotta be prepared to understand the cruel bottom lines when it's time. This ain't the 60s, 70s or 80s where you watched a player develop and mature into something special and remain here for all 10 years. This guy actually lit us up when he was at the top of his game. He doesn't look anything like that. I liked his 2007 season for us because there was a bit of a comeback. Last year showed me the same guy Baltimore determined wasn't the SAME Jamal they once had. And now it's a year later. In dawg years, it's looking more like 7 years later right about now. I don't think we OWE anybody anything at this time.
