I thought we would keep Ali and Walker...bit of a surprise there to me. The others are more practice squad types that I though we might keep there.

Do you think we keep 2 of those 3 cut WR's on the practice squad?

Hubbard was already on the Practice Squad once, and was on the roster last year... not sure he's allowed to be on the practice squad anymore?

Further... they have a roster spot open. Who do you think they pick up to fill it?

maybe this is why we went down to 52. Make room for him and then *MAYBE* Some trade coming up after.

Browns put in waiver claim on QB

by Marla Ridenour on September 3, 2009

The Boston Globe reported that the Browns were one of four teams who put in a waiver claim Wednesday on New England quarterback Kevin O'Connell, a third-round pick in 2008.

Detroit got him by virtue of its 0-16 record last season.

According to the Herald, the Denver Broncos and New York Jets also tried to obtain O'Connell.

Former Browns defensive lineman Louis Leonard told the Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald that he was getting a pedicure in a Cleveland nail salon when his agent called him to tell him he'd been traded to the Carolina Panthers. Leonard was dealt Tuesday for an undisclosed draft choice.

There was no justified reason to not cut ratliff he has proven that he is a really bad version of DA bartel was the better choice -1 point mangini for keeping a useless hopeless project alive lets just hope he used better judgement on the starting job...;)

I like Legget, great potential... too bad it didn't work out this year again.

They'll sign him or Hubbard to the practice squad.....................but I don't think both. But, I also can't see them staying with 4 TE's.............something could be up there. They talked about releasing Heiden or maybe putting him on the PUP. that would reduce the roster to 51.

Per ESPN:

Browns: Cutdown analysis

September 5, 2009 6:40 PM

Posted by ESPN.com’s James Walker

Biggest surprise: The Browns released some veterans they hoped would contribute more to the team this year in receiver David Patten and cornerback Corey Ivy. Both signed in Cleveland as free agents to provide veteran stability, but neither played well enough in training camp or the preseason. Ivy was one of the extra cornerbacks in Cleveland’s sub packages, and now the team needs to find someone else to fill that role before next week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Browns also made enough cuts to leave one roster spot available, which means they’re up to something in the coming days.

No-brainers: Reports began to circulate in the past 24 hours that starting tailback Jamal Lewis would be released Saturday by the Browns. But that proved to be nothing more than a rumor. The Browns have no proven talent behind Lewis and would have gone into the season with a rookie sixth-round pick -- James Davis -- as their starting running back. Plus, the Browns paid Lewis a sizable roster bonus this offseason and would have taken a significant cap hit as a result. Piecing it all together, it made the most sense for Cleveland to keep Lewis.

What’s next: As evident by their open roster spot, the Browns should be one of the more active teams in the next 48 hours. Compared to the rest of the AFC North, Cleveland is lacking overall depth and talent at several positions. Browns head coach Eric Mangini has a penchant for acquiring his former players. So look for the Browns to experience some turnover at the bottom of their roster for veterans Mangini is familiar with.

Make room for who?!?!?

You do realize that we missed O'Connell on the waiver claim, right?

I'm trying to get a look at position by position breakdown. Surprised they keeped only 5 receivers unless I missed something. I guess Patton is always out there if they have an injury. He stays in playing shape year around.

How the breakdown in positions is a little interesting:

10 DB's

10 LB's

6 DL's

26 total defensive players

8 OL's

5 WR's

3 RB's

3 TE's

3 QB's

1 FB

23 total offensive players

1 P

1 K

1 LS

3 total special team players

I would expect the #53 guy to be on the offensive side, likely an OL guy.

Well, well, well....whadda ya know. Jamal Lewis was not cut. :D

I wouldn't celebrate too much either way on this one. If he makes the team and averages under 3 yards a carry - it's really not going to help us. I know some people thinking he's still the same back ready for 2000 yards but then there's those that have watched him struggle to reach the holes before they close this preseason The RB that loses the step or two or three isn't one with upside. He's running too upright and it's taking him an eternity to reach the line of scrimmage. He looks better on the screen passes but who hasn't?

As I commented in the Mary Kay post - I would have had mixed feelings if he got cut. It sounded like he's been a tremendous help to James Davis. Understanding that, he also took Harrison under his wing conditioning last year. That's the part that gives me the warm fuzzies about leadership and attitude. That said, I don't want him turning into Trent Doofus with his unwillingness to accept the demotion if one is coming. Make sense?

Bottom line: the barometer in our division is set at Baltimore and Pittsburgh convenient or not. Lewis couldn't make either one of those teams at RB right now. I think him making the team says we're emaciated at the RB depth. That's HOW you sign a RB released by his last Canadian Football Team. Doesn't mean Lewis rocked the house by any means. Me agrees with Riff and even those columnists that think we need to sign a young back capable of upside. If James Davis goes down to injury we're pretty much FUBAR.

I believe I would have made room for Patten. I don't understand keeping 10 backers, especially Leon Williams. One thing is for sure, Mangie loves special teams guys.

Who the hell is Corey Hilliard?

The Ike Sowells reign is over with.

I'm also a little concerned about Ali being cut, he was a pretty solid backup.

They obviously decided to go with youth in the defensive backfield by keeping Lockett, Francies and Lawson. Poteat can play both corner and safety and Sorenson is a staple at ST's. It was smart to bring in Hood and Ivy but there were no injuries and the kids showed more.

They have to bring in another lineman because Hadnot is not ready to play yet.

Bartel clearly was better than Ratliff all camp long, but does it really matter? Maybe Mangie is not totally the best player wins the competition huh? It would look silly to cut Ratliff for a guy named Bartel after trading for him.

As for the backs I'd like to see them go after Tyrell Sutton and stash both him and Jennings on the practice squad along with Walker and possibly Leggett. Having only 3 backs and one FB makes it pretty thin, especially if a couple of injuries hit fast. It would be nice to have a couple backs on the PS that know the system.

What I am kinda expecting is you will see us slowly start switching to a two back system with Harrison or Davis taking over the primary runner position and Jamal taking 3rd down and goal line. This way Jamal can still show these guys how to play and be a positive influence on them. I do think this will be the end of the road for him though. Just my thoughts on it.

TRUE.

When you think about what he'll earn this year counting his roster bonus - he's prolly outearning every one of our coaches except Mangini. If all he's going to stick around for is coaching the younger guys - it makes sense to compare his earnings with others doing that. I watch this guy try to get it going and my first impression is "ouch." This guy looks like his body is telling him it doesn't want to run anymore but the competitive athlete in him is fighting the signals. I'm just trying to be honest about what I'm seeing.

If the PLAYERS want free agency in this era they gotta be prepared to understand the cruel bottom lines when it's time. This ain't the 60s, 70s or 80s where you watched a player develop and mature into something special and remain here for all 10 years. This guy actually lit us up when he was at the top of his game. He doesn't look anything like that. I liked his 2007 season for us because there was a bit of a comeback. Last year showed me the same guy Baltimore determined wasn't the SAME Jamal they once had. And now it's a year later. In dawg years, it's looking more like 7 years later right about now.

I don't think we OWE anybody anything at this time. There's one exception and his name is Josh Cribbs.
