Steven Kwan’s walk-off catch was a Gold Glove dream: Guardians Breakfast

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Steven Kwan called “game,” but it was his glove that spoke the loudest Wednesday in Houston.

★★  Cleveland’s Gold Glove left fielder made a sensational diving catch on a soft liner by Mauricio Dubón in the 10th inning that would have tied the score in extra innings. Instead, Kwan gathered himself after the catch and threw to second base to double up automatic runner Victor Caratini and rescue a 3-2 victory for the Guardians.

★ It snapped a brief two-game losing skid and marked Cleveland’s second win in it’s last four games, all extra-innings affairs.

In a postgame interview with Bally Sports Great Lakes, Kwan said he was not aware just how far Caratini had strayed from the bag, nor exactly how much time he had to get the ball to Andrés Giménez at second.

“That ball was sinking, a line drive and I just had to go get it,” Kwan said. “That’s kind of a dead spot where it’s at. I just had to go get it. I saw Gimi waving his hands. I didn’t know I had that much time. I tried to scramble and get it out (of my glove). Luckily we got him.”

★ Kwan, who drove in the game-winning run with a double in the top of the 10th and delivered an RBI triple in the fifth, told Bally’s Andre Knott that Cleveland’s never-quit approach is alive and well, even after a tough stretch of games against Atlanta and the Astros.

“It just shows the resilience of our team, the boys, our staff,” Kwan said. ★ “We’re never giving up. We’ve got a lot of life.”  >--> CONTINUED by Joe Nogan !  >-->

Volume opponent

Astros righty Justin Verlander made his 56th career start against Cleveland, taking a no decision in Wednesday’s contest. It’s the most games against any one opponent for the 19-year veteran and future Hall of Famer.

Verlander has compiled a 23-24 mark in those 56 starts with a 4.41 ERA in 352 2/3 innings. He has allowed 319 hits and 126 walks while giving up 132 earned runs. He has 366 career strikeouts against Cleveland hitters, more than any other opponent he has faced.

Verlander’s 366 strikeouts are the second-most among active pitchers and 35th all-time against a single opponent behind Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw, who has 402 punchouts in his career against the Giants.

What's next is possibly Kyle Manzardo gets called up to fill Kwan's spot if he goes on the Injury List.

Manzardo isn't an outfielder, but a hard-hitting 1b/designated hitter. Manzardo came to Cleveland in the Aaron Civale deal, he's one of the Gs top prospects.

Probably see Will Brennan slide over to left for the time being?

Guardians win series vs Angels, remain in first place minutes after the Cavs win Game 7 of their opening playoff series.

Steven Kwan to 10 day  IL,  call up Kyle Manzardo.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians leadoff hitter Steven Kwan is headed to the injured list with a hamstring strain and Cleveland will call up top prospect Kyle Manzardo, a person familiar with the move told the Associated Press on Sunday.

Kwan, who entered the weekend leading the AL in batting, underwent an MRI after leaving Saturday's game with tightness.

The team has the results and intends to place Kwan on the 10-day IL, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Guardians won't make the roster moves until Monday before opening a three-game series with Detroit.

Kwan's injury is giving the Guardians a chance to add the hard-hitting Manzardo, who was acquired last year from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline for pitcher Aaron Civale.

Manzardo is a of middle-of-the-lineup slugger who might be able to bolster Cleveland's light-hitting offensive attack.

The Guardians didn't want to rush Manzardo, so they had him open the season at Triple-A Columbus. But the 23-year-old has been on a tear with the Clippers, hitting eight homers and driving in 14 runs in the last 14 games.

The Guardians believe he's ready to take on major league pitchers.

“He’s been good against left-handed pitching, his approach against lefties has improved,” president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said before the Guardians beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 in their series finale on Sunday.

“He’s worked really hard at his defense, both his footwork around the bag and his throwing and he continues to put up and manage really good at-bats.”

Manzardo will likely be used primarily as the team's designated hitter, but can spell Josh Naylor at first base.

Kwan's injury is a blow to the Guardians and the two-time Gold Glove winner, who has been among baseball's best hitters this season.

Before getting hurt while running down a fly ball, the 26-year-old Kwan was batting .353 with a league-leading 47 hits and 28 runs. He has gone 74 straight plate appearances before his last strikeout
