Why Our Loved Ones Believe Political Conspiracy Theories - and Ways to Repair the Damage

Recommended Posts

I don’t often listen to podcasts but l stumbled on this one and found it interesting.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/apple-news-in-conversation/id1577591053?i=1000669328485

It’s an interview with a woman who is a digital reporter who wrote a book about few different people who really got sucked in to Qanon, and she tries to dissect why they got in to it in the first place and the effects it had on their loved ones. It’s interesting because the people she covers come from a variety of backgrounds and it seems they all got in to it to fill a perceived hole in their life.

The stuff l found most helpful were the approaches their family members took to address their loved ones’ embrace of conspiracy theories, some worked better than others. Apparently the whole “fact checking” thing is not a viable approach, but there are other approaches that are more effective.

In this chapter, we explore doubt, its role, and the way it is being handled in the context of the public controversy about the COVID-19 vaccine. We approach conspiracy theories as argumentative discourses and reconstruct the generic structure of a conspiracy theory macro argument.

I've posted stuff like this in the past.

Conspiracy theorists have a hole to fill. They want to be part of a community. They like to feel special when they have nothing special about them in real life.

All supercharged by COVID and lockdowns.

Information like this goes over as well as you'd think on here. As you can already start to see...

Trump introduced the world of "fake news" and posting your own "truths". Increasingly biased online "news" sources fueled this. The cat is out of the bag and our general population is too stupid to go back. At least for a while.

No, Trump exposed the state run legacy media where brainless people fall in lock step, just like sheep.

Baaa Comrade.

I thought woody was an engineer not a psychologist.

I understand much of this, but l’m the one who found it helpful to listen to the podcast. I have an older family member that very much subscribes to conspiracy theories, and this has been going on long before Qanon was a thing. This family member has given me no less than 6 different dates the world was going to end in the last 20 or 30 years, all of which have come and gone. I’m sure they’ll be right at some point.

In the meantime l’m just looking for strategies to make holidays less awkward. I have no doubt conspiracy stuff happens and Bigfoot may exist, but shit can get weird at family functions when this stuff comes to the forefront.

That's a tough one. I have a couple people at work that get into conspiracy theories and it's a pain in the ass. I just change the subject if I can and if I can't I find a way to get away from them. Good people but it makes my brain hurt sometimes.

It's wild that trans folks just live rent free in your head... A weird obsession you have. Maybe a life you wished you could have lived...

The right wing propaganda machine worker too well on you. I think it broke you. Unless you were already broken ... Which would make sense too.

no, it's just in the news. and you support it. So we comment. You just wish you could live in someone's head vicariously, so you could finally know what it is like to think instead of knee jerk feel.

You need a new hat, if possible. Maybe, someday, you will become a true American, and ditch your

and wear this one:

if they can find one small enough to fit your woodpecker head.

Cal, no one in here mentioned "trans" until you did.

It isn't constantly in the news. I think you just seen it out with the "news" you consume

Maybe this is all triggering a long overdue awakening in your. Clearly you're fighting it now by being anti trans, but it isn't healthy. Go be your true, authentic self cal.

(And you constantly bring me up in thread titles, the majority of your recent posts are woodpecker pics, etc. It's clear I'm in your head 24/7. I've been saying it for years but your obsession with me is creepy man. Or woman. Whatever you prefer. )

I mostly have to contend with the right wing of the conspiracy theory spectrum these days, which is helpful to know. Global warming may have been a contributing factor in one of our “world is going to end” conversations of the past though.

Conspiracy theories are interesting and it can be fun to ponder on them, but like any other interest or hobby, it can be a bit much if someone indulges to the point that common ground and simple understanding dissipates.
