I read a good story on this, the Haitian invasion of Sylacauga, AL. This article basically details the locals’ responses to roughly 60 Haitians that suddenly showed up. Some locals were freaked the fuck out, some locals reached out.

Someone in their community spoke Creole and interviewed them. This group was basically transient workers of some sort, probably construction, and their families, and they likely wouldn’t be there long because they were in between jobs. There must be some network of employers that hire them, probably for cheap, and they go wherever the work is.

That would nearly triple the population of Sylacauga.

It’s pretty apparent to me that much of the driving force behind some of these legal immigration loopholes is big business seeking cheap labor. Those big businesses aren’t exactly stepping up to admit that, l’m sure that would be a PR nightmare. It’s sort of like our dirty little secret with how the sausage is made, if you get my meaning.

My adult daughter works in the restaurant industry, and currently at a pretty nice one in downtown Cincy. Up front the staff is predominantly caucasian native English speaking citizens, but back in the kitchen? All Spanish speakers as their first language with questionable legal statuses. My kid’s bilingual, it’s not an issue for her. But this is not an uncommon scenario in the restaurant biz and l know she enjoys the status of being someone who can bridge the gap.

But the fact that her restaurant group has these hiring practices is a piece of the puzzle.

It’s evident to me that we as a nation are struggling to find ways to fill shoes and make profit happen.

I also think the govt is turning a blind eye because of certain tax advantages to the govt. if Jose Schmo submits a W-4 to their employer with 9 random numbers as their SSN and his name and address, he can start work tomorrow and the govt will be none the wiser until that W-2 is generated a year later and it’s discovered that those 9 digits don’t link up to a Jose Schmo.

Social Security and Medicare tax alone is 15.3% of their wages, so if Jose gets paid $30k, that’s $4,590 the govt gets to keep. If Jose stays at that job more than 2 years, the govt will eventually catch up and implement backup withholding, which will basically net even more money the govt can keep and never have to pay back, but chances are Jose will be gone by then.

Multiply Jose by 100,000 and you’re close to a half billion for one year.
