George Kokinis was fired Monday as general manager and escorted from Browns headquarters, according to league sources. The Browns are not confirming the reports.

Hours later, sources said Ernie Accorsi was hired as the team's GM. The move is a blast from the past for Browns' fans. Accorsi was the Browns' GM from 1985 to 1992.

He also served as GM of the Colts from 1982 to 83, and also worked in the Giants' front office from 1994 to 2004, including a stint as New York's GM from 1998 and on.

In 2004, he spearheaded a trade to get No. 1 pick Eli Manning from the Chargers.

Kokinis has been on the hot seat for more than three weeks, the source said. The ax falls one day after Browns owner Randy Lerner said he plans on hiring a strong football personality to run the Browns.

The firing comes at the start of the bye week.

Kokinis was hired Jan. 23 at the urging of Browns coach Eric Mangini. Lerner has said Mangini's job is safe for now.

More to come as details become available. Tuesday's print editions will have a full report.

In my opinion, this is an excellent move. Of course, I wanted Kosar to fill this position, but as a few pointed out, Bernie doesn't have the experience, and may have had a tough time. I'm confident Accorsi will do what it takes to bring the situation back to resembling a real NFL franchise. He can use Kosar's talents and instincts to his advantage to repair the damage done over the past 10 years.

Watched Mike and Mike this morning and they didn't confirm the Accorsi story. They did say that Lerner's been "investigating" Kokinis, Mangini and the assistant who was recently fired for the last month for both professional and personal improprieties.

So, it sounds like Randy boy hired a three ring circus for a front office. Dare I say, menage a trois?

Nice job, Randy. The idiots are running the asylum.

Give him a little slack... this thing could have lasted 3 or 4 years..he started investigating them in September?

I am actually proud that he is paying enough attention to know some sheit was going very wrong...and thsi was all done before the hge public outcry ...so its not a knee jerk reaction

someone was doing some dirty behind the scenes and randy is not tolerating more of the BS...

yeah, i read that they are checking phone records to see if he did anything to "compromise the future" of the team. he couldn't have done anything worse on the phone than what he did on the field.

Wait I may not be wrong yet Jeff Schudel isn't backing down from it. http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/200...7286.txt#photo1

BEREA — The Browns are looking to Ernie Accorsi as their new general manager after telling George Kokinis to resign from the same job or be fired, according to league sources.

Accorsi, 65, was the Browns general manager from 1985-92 and presided over getting Bernie Kosar in the 1985 supplemental draft. He guided them to three AFC championship appearances from 1986-89.

More recently, Accorsi was general manager of the Giants, a position he held from 1998 until he retired in January of 2007. His boldest move as Giants general manager was engineering a draft day trade in 2004 to land quarterback Eli Manning.

Accorsi was retired by the time the Giants won the Super Bowl following the 2007 season, but he was instrumental in the Giants' championship. He built the Giants team that made it to Super Bowl XXXV after the 2000 season, a game won by the Ravens, 34-7.

As of late Monday, the Browns had not confirmed their interest in Accorsi. At 10:40 p.m. they issued the following statement regarding Kokinis. It did not address whether Kokinis resigned or was fired.

"Cleveland Browns General Manager George Kokinis is no longer actively involved with the organization. In response to rumors and reports that Kokinis was escorted from the building today, the Browns deny those reports. In the interest of protecting the parties involved we will withhold further comment."

Kokinis, a silent part of the Browns front office behind embattled coach Eric Mangini despite his title, was hired on Jan. 23 at the urging of Mangini. The two had been friends since both worked for the Browns at the beginning of their careers in the mid-1990s.

The move on Kokinis and rumored pursuit of Accorsi comes one day after team owner Randy Lerner reacted to the Browns losing, 30-6, in Chicago by saying he wants to hire a strong football authority to lead the football side of the Browns' operation.

Mangini did not mention any action involving Kokinis during his 3 p.m. regular Monday press conference. Lerner did not immediately respond to emails about Kokinis or Accorsi.

Kokinis worked for the Browns from 1991-95 and then followed the franchise to Baltimore in 1996. He worked for the Ravens for 13 years, most recently as the director of pro personnel.

In a separate email response, Lerner said he has no plans to replace Mangini for now. Mangini said he spoke by phone with Lerner and is satisfied he has Lerner's support despite the Browns' 1-7 record and everything else that has happened under Mangini's watch, including:

* Firing longtime employees from the public relations department and team website.

* Remodeling the team's practice facility at an estimated cost of $5 million.

* Ordering rookies after the minicamp in June to ride buses to Mangini's football camp in Connecticut, a 10-hour ride one way.

* Questionable handling of quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. Quinn was the starter to begin the season. He was benched at halftime of the third game. Derek Anderson replaced him and he was pulled with three minutes left in the fourth quarter Sunday. Now Mangini is pondering who will start when the Browns return from their current bye for a home game against the Ravens on Nov. 16.

* Mangini fined an unidentified player $1,701 for failing to pay a $3 tab for a water bottle at the team hotel. The fine was spelled out in a list of team rules Mangini presented to his players.

* On Oct. 5, Braylon Edwards allegedly punched a man outside a Cleveland bar. Two days later Edwards, who caught 16 touchdown passes two years ago, was traded to the Jets.

* On Oct. 23, cornerback Eric Wright was involved in a one-car accident when he lost control of his Mercedes on a freeway entrance ramp. His car flipped several times. He escaped injury but might have been killed if he hadn't been wearing a safety belt, according to Cleveland police Lt. Joe Stacho.

* Last week two fans announced they plan to lead a boycott urging fans to stay out of Cleveland Browns Stadium for the opening kickoff against the Ravens on Nov. 16.

* Last week Erin O'Brien was fired as Mangini's personal assistant for unspecified reasons.

I'm just tired of the Browns being a punchline. How is it that all these jokers are running the shop? Does Lerner care at all?

yeah, he cares so much that he stared into the team's faces at halftime until they played like superbowl champions. oh wait, doing that accomplished nothing. i guess he doesn't care at all then.

Here is a good question: Why was Accorsi "terminated" from the Browns back in 1992? Was it a case of BB not wanting the experienced, proven Accorsi looking over his shoulder, making personell decisions, etc.?

And how ironic is that? Accorsi is taking over the GM position and Mangini is an belichickian disciple. Weird. Remember Belichick wanted total control and he got it. Mangini on the other hand, didn't. He got it taken away.

So now who's it gonna be? Kosar, Floyd Reese, Charlie Casserly, Tom Donahoe, Tony Dungy, Cower, Shotenheimer, Maybe Jim Brown hes been a consultant for quite a while, maybe he's ready for the next step? Any other candidates? John Madden.. lol

I would consider Rich McKay or Tony Dungee.

from another fan site....for anyone else (like me) that wasn't aware..

The newest rumor I'm hearing out of Berea (and none of this has been verified yet) is that Accorsi is coming in to Cleveland not to become the GM but to work with Kosar so that he will be groomed for the job. Kosar has run a football team before (Arena league) so he does have a little experience - not in the NFL though. Also the arena team he ran went from a last place team to a playoff team in one year. I'm not saying that this qualifies him for the job yet, but with Accorsi to groom him I think it might work.

any more details re: this?
