Eric Mangini will return for a second season as coach of the Cleveland Browns.

New team president Mike Holmgren decided Thursday to retain Mangini, whose job security was in jeopardy after the Browns started 1-11. But the team regrouped and finished with a four-game winning streak, Cleveland’s longest since 1994, to help save Mangini.

eam spokesman Neal Gulkis said Mangini’s staff will return as well.

Holmgren spent the past two days in meetings with Mangini, who was fired after last season by the New York Jets.

Mangini felt confident all along that he would be back despite signs that the team was planning to go in another direction. Browns owner Randy Lerner did not attend any of the club’s final three games, and there were reports that Holmgren was already lining up possible replacements.

Instead, Holmgren elected continuity over a swift coaching purge. Mangini is Cleveland’s fourth coach since 1999.

During his introductory news conference Tuesday, Holmgren said Mangini had a legitimate chance of keeping his job. Cleveland’s new boss then evidently liked what he heard during his face-to-face meetings with Mangini, who had an up-and-down first season with the Browns.

Although he and Mangini have differing offensive and defensive philosophies, Holmgren apparently found enough common ground to want to work with Mangini.

Mangini was granted a second season one day shy of his first anniversary with the Browns, who hired him on Jan. 8 last year.

The Browns also confirmed Seattle pro personnel director Will Lewis will interview to be their general manager. Lewis has a strong background with Holmgren, working with him in Green Bay and Seattle.

On Wednesday, Holmgren interviewed Philadelphia GM Tom Heckert. The team has been without a GM since George Kokinis was fired Nov. 2.

Lewis played cornerback for the Seahawks. After his playing career ended, he worked as a scout with the Packers before following Holmgren to Seattle, where he joined the team’s pro personnel department.

Holmgren’s interview with Lewis, who is black, fulfills the Browns’ obligation to comply with the NFL’s Rooney Rule for minority candidates.

BEREA, Ohio -- Eric Mangini will return as Browns coach for the 2010 season.

"I'm happy to announce that Eric Mangini will return as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2010," new Browns President Mike Holmgren said in a team release.

"Over the past few weeks Eric and I have had a chance to talk on a number of occasions including our meetings over the last two days. I was able to gain some tremendous insight into his thought process and philosophies, and came away from our meetings very impressed. In my opinion, Eric has gained the respect and admiration of players, coaches and others in the organization, and with him continuing to lead the team I feel that we are headed in the right direction. Working together, our goal is to build on the strong tradition of this franchise and help get the Browns back to the playoffs."

Mangini evidently impressed Holmgren during at least two days of one-on-one meetings, which were held to determine if the men from different football cultures could co-exist and work together to reach the same goal.

Mangini, 5-11 in his first season as Browns coach, has three years remaining on his contract. The original four-year deal has been reported as being worth $15.3 million.

"I want to thank Mike for the opportunity to not only meet with him and share my thoughts and vision on what it takes to lead a team, but also to continue what we started here," Mangini said in the release. "I believe we made some real, tangible progress throughout the course of the season, culminating with wins in our final four games. I feel as though the culture and mindset that we established this year have laid the foundation for success in 2010 and beyond, and I'm looking forward to working with Mike and a general manager in making this happen."

Neither Holmgren nor Mangini was made available for questions, and no formal press conference has been announced.

It's a stunning triumph for Mangini -- and keeps his winning streak alive. After starting his era with a franchise-worst 1-11 record, he turned around the team to win the last four games.

At his introductory news conference on Tuesday, Holmgren had said that Mangini "absolutely" had the chance to come back, even though Holmgren downplayed the four-game winning streak at the end.

Holmgren gave Mangini a list of points to consider the night before their big meeting on Wednesday. That meeting lasted two hours, a team source said Mangini reported to work at 7 the next morning -- two hours ahead of Holmgren -- and the two football "lifers" met again.

Holmgren informed Mangini of his decision at about 3 o'clock.

A club source said that most of Mangini's assistants will also return. One who won't is receivers coach George McDonald, who has accepted a similar position at Rutgers University.

Well there's a nice surprise.

EM stays.

i wouldn't say i was surprised...more like relieved.

i like this pairing-a lot! mangini has balls and can make the hard decisions-he won't roll over for Holmgren if he doesn't agree>>decisions will be consensual. i also feel he will be a great mentor for Eric, sharing his offensive knowledge will only make EM better and more well rounded (and possibly give his defensive base even more insight).

i foresee a great relationship between the two that will last a very long time. B)

Just heard on the radio that Holmgren's agent didn't want him to keep Mangini. This tells me that despite the media's witch-hunt and advice from the guy in charge of his career, Holmgren made his own decision. This is very, very reassuring.

Here we come teams in AFC North! Lock up your inbred families because the Dawgs are waking up and stretching their legs! All that poking and tail pulling when we were sleeping is about to come up and bite you on the a**!!

Of course Bob Lamont didn't want Holmgren to keep Mangini. He was trying to get John Fox (another of his clients) in Cleveland. Lamont has a history of marrying clients together.

I'm thankful that someone's agent couldn't interfere on the hiring process. These guys (agents) must think they are superstars with all of their power
