Palin lashes out at `Family Guy' </H1>By BECKY BOHRER, Associated Press Writer Becky Bohrer, Associated Press Writer – Wed Feb 17, 6:27 am ETJUNEAU, Alaska – Sarah Palin is lashing out at the portrayal of a character with Down syndrome on the Fox animated comedy "Family Guy."

 

In a Facebook posting headlined "Fox Hollywood — What a Disappointment," the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and current Fox News contributor said Sunday night's episode felt like "another kick in the gut." Palin's youngest son, Trig, has Down syndrome.

 

The episode features the character Chris falling for a girl with Down syndrome. On a date, he asks what her parents do.

 

She replies: "My dad's an accountant, and my mom is the former governor of Alaska."

 

Palin resigned as Alaska governor last summer.

 

Palin's oldest daughter, Bristol, also was quoted on her mother's Facebook page, calling the show's writers "heartless jerks."

 

"When you're the son or daughter of a public figure, you have to develop thick skin. My siblings and I all have that, but insults directed at our youngest brother hurt too much for us to remain silent," she is quoted as saying.

 

"If the writers of a particularly pathetic cartoon show thought they were being clever in mocking my brother and my family yesterday, they failed," Bristol Palin added in the Monday posting. "All they proved is that they're heartless jerks."

 

Palin wrote that she'd asked her daughter what she thought of the show and Bristol's reply was "a much more restrained and gracious statement than I want to make about an issue that begs the question: When is enough enough?"

 

This isn't the first time Palin has spoken out over an attack, real or perceived, on her family. Last year, she condemned a joke David Letterman made about her daughter, for which he later apologized.

 

A "Family Guy" publicist didn't immediately return an e-mail seeking comment.

I enjoy family guy as the shock animation material it is like South Park...... Mr. Mcfarlane is not a political insider or pundit..... he makes animation satire that uses shocking topics and others comedic tools to be popular.

 

I admit that at times the Material on Family guy is uncomfortable (the old pedophile) but in context to the what the show is which is aired by FOX....... its not a "attack" from liberals cal......... its a case of shock entertainment nothing more nothing less.

I've met these kids over the years. Some are very, very excellent at chess on a high school level.

 

THEY vote.

But a lot of them don't vote. Even is some schools systems, they get little notice,

 

nor protection from bullies, nor consideration for supplies/comuters/smart boards, etc.

 

One of the special kids became an HONOR STUDENT. They should have the same

come on Heck comedy is in the eye of the beholder, I am South Korean and mexican my father used to call me a smart tomato picker..... I use the term Chink at times referring to myself or even spick with some of my hispanic family members..... I find the phonetic sounds of those words quite funny (but that is my sense of humor) Now if some stranger being rude said that to me out of the blue or called my children that to be hurtful I would take offense not at the term but at the persons intent........

 

Ultimately if you cant laugh at language or a concept that may refer to who you (size,shape,species,race,genetic abnormality) you are going to be victimized by a concept...... I do find a LOT of things on Family guy quite crass and distasteful....... however the shock factor is part of the writers formulas..... they are also at time quite Witty and intelligent/political in their humor..... But than again that is to me personally as I see it.

 

A friend of mine once asked me if I thought someone who was mentally challenged and they ran around not knowing they were different but totally happy with their existance and they did not have the same faculties the rest of have..... are they really unhappy? He thought they probably had a better quality of life because they were constantly happy....... I dont know if that is true but conceptually I agree with it.

The thrust of the joke is "Sarah Palin has a Down's baby." That's not a joke, unless you think it's funny for someone to have a Down's baby.

 

I don't think it's funny for someone to have a Down's baby. I think it's admirable.

 

If you want to make fun of the way she parades the baby around as a showpiece, or how she reportedly called it her "Retarded baby" all the time, then you might be able to find some humor in that because it would point out her cynicism and hypocrisy. But simply pointing out that she has one isn't funny; it's lazy.
