2010 NFL Combine: Cleveland Browns Show Interest in Drafting Dexter McCluster

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images According to reports by the Scout.com NFL Combine Team, Ole Miss running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster was surrounded by many teams, but the Cleveland Browns were one of three that seemed more interested in the athlete when he was at the podium in Indianapolis.

 

The two other teams showing as much interest in McCluster as the Browns were the St. Louis Rams and the Green Bay Packers.

 

McCluster broke onto the seen in the last half of the 2009 college football season and ended up being the first player in SEC history to rush for over 1,000 yards and have over 500 yards receiving in the same season.

 

Small for a running back since his official weigh-in was 5'7" and 172 pounds, McCluster's speed is what many will be looking at since he will most likely have one of the fastest times in the 40-yard dash, nearing the 4.3-second mark.

 

This is an interesting scenario for the Browns, since they now have their new starter in Jerome Harrison, who himself is smaller for a running back at 5'9" and 205 pounds.

 

They also have James Davis, who showed promise in the preseason last year during his rookie season but got hurt early and missed the rest of the 2009 season.

 

Davis is bigger than Harrison, at 5'11" and 220 pounds, but still unproven.

 

McCluster will be running drills with both the running backs and wide receivers on Sunday, but where he would fit into the Browns' plans is a mystery, especially since they already have a very dangerous weapon in Josh Cribbs.

 

With an offense that lacked talent in 2009, the more talent the merrier at this point in the rebuilding stage of the team.

 

McCluster is currently projected as a third-round pick, which the Browns do have two of, at Nos. 72 and 93.

But, as a followup, he didn't run any 4.3....but have the cb's even run at the combine? I don't think they run until tomorrow. this is crazy. @@

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images The Cleveland Browns brass have been very busy at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis the past several days and here is a list of offensive players they have met with.

 

This list is very interesting and a possible clue as to what the team may or may not decide to do in April's 2010 NFL Draft.

 

Here are the following players:

 

Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan

 

LeFevour is 6'3", 230 pounds, and good size for an NFL-caliber quarterback, but sadly he did not throw in Indy and he also said he is changing his throwing motion a bit. With everything to gain since so many quarterbacks are not throwing, president Mike Holmgren has mentioned his distaste for quarterbacks who do not throw at the combine.

 

Projected as a third- or fourth-round pick.

 

Tim Hiller, QB, Western Michigan

 

Hiller is also a big quarterback at 6'4" and 229 pounds, but he did not make any noise when the quarterbacks took the field and threw on Sunday.

 

Projected as being undrafted.

 

Dexter McCluster, RB/WR, Ole Miss

 

A very intriguing addition since he is small at 5'9" and 172 pounds, but he was also able to put up more bench-pressing reps than the 241-pound Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount, 20-18. If used properly, McCluster can be very dangerous, but he did disappoint some by running a slower 40-yard dash time than the 236-pound Stanford running back, Toby Gerhart, 4.55-4.53.

 

Projected as a second- or third-round pick.

 

Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota (pictured above)

 

Decker has the size at 6'3" and 217 pounds to be a good receiver in the NFL, but he did not stand out at the combine with his individual performances, and he did not run the 40-yard dash either.

 

Projected as a fourth-round pick.

 

Ryan Wolfe, WR, UNLV

 

Another receiver that did not run the 40-yard dash. Wolfe has good size at 6'1" and 205 pounds, but he did not show any flash at all.

 

Projected as being undrafted.

 

Anthony McCoy, TE, USC

 

McCoy disappointed a bit with his combine performance by running one of the slowest 40-yard dash times for tight ends at 4.79, but he is big at 6'4" and 249 pounds.

 

Projected as a second- or third-round pick.

 

Ed Dickson, TE, Oregon

 

Dickson did impress at the combine and he ran an impressive 4.67 in the 40-yard dash despite his size at 6'4" and 249 pounds. Dickson showed good hands in the receiving drills on the field, too.

 

Projected as a second- or third-round pick.

 

Adam Ulatoski, OT, Texas

 

Ulatoski is big at 6'5" and 300 pounds but he fell into the middle of all the offensive linemen in his bench-pressing reps, yielding 24 (the top performer had 45).

 

Projected as a fifth- or sixth-round pick.

 

Ciron Black, OT, LSU

 

Black is literally a beast at 6'4" and 327 pounds, but he was overshadowed at the combine and he too was not able to lift many bench reps with 23, but he did run an admirable 5.49 for an athlete his size.

 

Projected as a fourth- or fifth-round pick.

 

With the defensive players hitting the field in Indianapolis, look for the next update on that side of the ball Wednesday.
