I could be wrong on this but I bet the Republicans stopped the extension because the Democrats wanted to layer that on top of existing spending programs, rather than taking the needed funds from yet-unused 'stimulous' money. You are right about one thing, though. This is all about politics. However, you completely misread the story behind the story you'll get on the evening news.
