Braylon Edwards arrested for DUI

New York Jets receiver Braylon Edwards was arrested on a drunken driving charge in New York early Tuesday morning.

The Jets expressed their disappointment in the receiver in a statement Tuesday.

"We are very disappointed in Braylon's actions this morning. The Player Protect program is in place for our organization to prevent this situation. Braylon is aware of this program and showed poor judgment," the Jets said.

"We are reviewing the information with the league and will impose the appropriate disciplinary measures."

The 27-year-old Edwards was pulled over for having overly tinted windows in his Range Rover. Police smelled alcohol and Edwards blew .16 on a breathalyzer -- twice the legal limit, the New York Post reported.

Edwards, who caught a touchdown pass on Sunday in the Jets' victory over the New England Patriots, is currently in police custody and will be arraigned later Tuesday, the newspaper reported.

Edwards, a former first-round pick out of Michigan in 2005, was traded from Cleveland to New York in October after four-plus seasons with the Browns.

The Jets acquired Edwards, a former first-round pick out of Michigan in 2005, from the Cleveland Browns only days after he was accused of punching a man outside a Cleveland nightclub in October 2009. The victim was an acquaintance of LeBron James. Edwards pleaded not guilty at the time, but he ended up pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct. He received probation and a $1,000 fine.

Edwards was required to make that plea in person, and it took him away from the Jets for a day as they prepared for a playoff game last Jan. 12. At the time, the Jets feared would be slapped with a one-game suspension from the NFL, but they learned in late June that there would be no sanction from the league.

On Monday, Edwards was chastised by coach Rex Ryan -- publicly and privately. In a team meeting, Ryan announced that he was prepared to give Edwards a game ball for his performance in Sunday's win, but he decided against it because of a taunting penalty after his touchdown reception.

"I love the way he played -- he was really into it -- but you're killing us," Ryan told reporters. "You can't put the team in that kind of jeopardy." Ryan added, "I appreciate how passionate he is, but you don't want to be selfish," Ryan said. "That's basically what that is."

This will almost certainly be Edwards' final season with the Jets. In the offseason, he signed a one-year tender for $6.05 million, and he's due to become an unrestricted free agent in 2011.

The Jets are thin at receiver as Santonio Holmes, acquired in an offseason trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has two games remaining on a four-game suspension he received for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The other receivers on the Jets' roster are Jerricho Cotcher, Brad Smith and David Clowney.

Information from ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Can someone please tell me why millionaires drive when drunk? At least a cab, damn.

The same reason poor people drink and drive. Their judgment becomes impaired and they make a poor choice.

Most people don't leave the door thinking they are going out to get hammered. It just happens in most cases.

All the MORE REASON to draft for CHARACTER, INTEGRITY and WORK ETHIC/LOVE FOR THE GAME.

Super star talents with no character just end up in trouble with the law, or causing trouble in the lockerroom...

or on the field....

SO glad Mangini and co. got Braylons stupid arse out of town !!!!

You know what is really bad, is that Braylon was with Stallworth the night morning he killed a man with his vehicle and mucked up his life pretty badly for a poor decision after a night out drinking. Braylon was pulled over at 5:15am this morning. What an idiot.

Word is though that it wasn't his fault. He would have been in bed by midnight but the 5-hr energy drink kicked in.

Jets have every right to be livid with Edwards, Ferguson, Gholston

Many think that the Jets should have gone farther with the play-but-won't-start discipline imposed on receiver Braylon Edwards. Though the labor agreement, in theory, prevents them from deactivating him with pay, it would have been very unwise for Edwards -- a free agent in 2011 -- to make a bad situation worse by taking a stand under circumstances suggesting that he wasn't taking responsibility.

But the Jets presumably placed winning on Sunday against the Dolphins over sending a message. The attitude isn't surprising, given that the team's recent personnel moves indicate a decidedly short-term, win-now focus.

Regardless, the team has every right to be very upset with Edwards and the men who reportedly were in the vehicle with him -- left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and defensive end Vernon Gholston. As Chris Mortensen of ESPN pointed out earlier today, the Jets conducted a team meeting last week to distribute a flyer explaining the Player Protect program, which provides no-cost transportation by limo from a "full service security and security driving company."

So it wasn't just one player who failed to connect the two dots and seek out a free ride. It was three.

And not only did they fail to take advantage of a free limo ride, but they also let the guy with the blood alcohol concentration of 0.16 percent drive.

On that point, we've been privately accosted by a member of the New York media for suggesting that Ferguson and Gholston were as drunk as or drunker than Edwards. Frankly, we're not sure what's worse -- three drunks allowing the guy who is perceived to be the most sober get behind the wheel or two sober guys deciding that the drunk guy should be their chauffeur.

Either way, three members of the Jets' starting lineup had an opportunity to avoid a major embarrassment for the franchise, and they failed.

Braylon to Judge......

"But your HONOR, I was PRACTICIN' gettin' relaxed for the game. I can't catch a DAMN thing sober!!"

Mike

Nah Mike it's the other way around. The reason Edwards drops so many passes in games is he can't figure out which of the three balls he's seeing is the real one.

Oh- and on a more serious note- the reason Edwards DID get pulled over was he was driving around @ 5AM! in a pimpmobile Land Rover that had the windows too blacked out to be legal. Shades of Kevin Mack way back doing blow on E 55th in a similar vehicle. Don't be TOO damn conspicuous.

Oh Braylon- didn't anything about your pal Donte sink into your head? Apparently not. Wazza matta, that 24\7 limo service the Jets have for their players not good enough for ya? Finally, you're still on probation for smacking LeBron's little pal around- you better hope the judge in Cow Town Cleveland doesn't send you to the slammer (he can) for a probation violation. I hope your research on finding out if New York City's jails are superior to Cleveland's has turned out well. Or did you just want to see how Plaxico was doing?

Now will Ryan privately kick BE's ass? If he doesn't, he should. Goodell probably will- he's got enough ammo now to suspend him for four games. I'd hazard a guess a guy Edwards size that blew a 0.16 @ 5AM probably killed off about a fifth of Grey Goose over the course of an evening- not exactly what most trainers would recommend as a steady diet to stay in top football shape during the season.

Curse Mangini all you want to- this may well have been one of his best moves to date.
