THE BROWNS BOARD

Positive post about our Browns

Recommended Posts

The Browns are quietly starting to put together some nice accomplishments, as proof that things are getting better.

Running back Peyton Hillis totaled a career-high 144 rushing yards with one touchdown and added seven receptions for 36 yards. His rushing total was the sixth-most ever against Baltimore as he became the first Brown to reach the 100-yard rushing plateau against the Ravens. He posted a career-long 43 yard run in the second quarter and his seven receptions tied a personal-best. He became just the fourth back to rush for more than 100 yards against the Ravens in their last 54 games and his one-yard touchdown in the second quarter marked the first touchdown allowed by the Ravens this season.

CATEGORY TOTAL HIGHLIGHT

Rushing yards 144 (Career high)

Rushing attempts 22 (Tied career high)

Total combined yards 180 (Career high)

Receptions 7 (Tied career high)

Long rush 48 (Career high)

HILLIS ON A SCORING STREAK

Running back Peyton Hillis has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the three games this season. If he records one next week, he would be the first Browns player to record a rushing touchdown in four consecutive games since Greg Pruitt did it in five straight games in 1975. Hillis’ three rushing scores are tied for fourth in the league and his 220 rushing yards are ninth. Hillis has shown his versatility as he also leads the team with 14 receptions. His reception total is fourth among all NFL running backs.

SUCCESS AGAINST CINCINNATI

During quarterback Jake Delhomme’s only career start against Cincinnati, he completed 20 of 34 attempts for 238 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and an 87.6 passer rating.

Wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi set career highs in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (148) in his fi rst career start against Cincinnati on October 4, 2009. It was the second-most receiving yards by a Browns rookie. In two career games against the Bengals, Massaquoi has recorded nine receptions for 160 yards.

Running back Jerome Harrison accounted for 152 yards of offense in his only start against Cincinnati on October 4, 2009. In that contest, Harrison reached the 100-yard rushing plateau for the first time in his career as he rushed for 121 yards. In six total contests against the Bengals, he has totaled 161 rushing yards on 39 carries and 12 receptions for 64 yards.

Wide receiver Joshua Cribbs is averaging 26.6 yards per kickoff return in 10 career games against Cincinnati, with a long of 85 yards on November 16, 2007. He has added nine rushes for 62 yards (6.9 avg.) and six receptions for 35 yards.

In three career games against the Bengals, tight end Robert Royal has four receptions for 48 yards with one touchdown.

In six career games against Cincinnati, defensive lineman Shaun Rogers has registered three sacks. He picked up a sack as a member of the Lions on December 18, 2005 and as a member of the Browns on September 28, 2008 and last year on November 29. He also blocked a field goal and a PAT against the Bengals on October 4, 2009.

In six career games against the Bengals, defensive back Eric Wright has recorded one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and seven passes defensed.

In 20 career games against the Bengals, kicker Phil Dawson is 25 of 28 on fi eld goal attempts, including a 52 yarder on September 15, 2002. He also has connected on 42 of 43 PAT attempts, including a career-high six November 28, 2004.

DON’T BRING THAT WEAK RUN-GAME IN HERE

The Browns and Cowboys are the only teams to not give up a rushing touchdown this season. Dating back to 2009, the Browns have not allowed a rushing touchdown or a single player to reach the 100 yard rushing plateau in five consecutive contests. The last player to rush for 100-yards against the Browns was Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles on December 20, 2009 when he ran for 154 yards.

MILESTONES

LB Marcus Benard...

• Could become the first Browns player since 1995, and third since sacks became an official stat in 1982, to record at least half a sack in five consecutive games in which he has appeared. He would join Anthony Pleasant (1995) and Reggie Camp (1984) as the only Browns to accomplish that feat.

DB Sheldon Brown...

• Has appeared in all 131 regular season games in his career, which began with Philadelphia in 2002. His streak is the second-longest among all active defensive backs.

WR/KR Joshua Cribbs…

• With 10 total touchdowns via return in his career, needs one return touchdown to tie Devin Hester (11) for fourth, two to tie Dante Hall and Eric Metcalf (12) for second and three to tie Brian Mitchell for first place on the NFL all-time career list.

• With 7,161 career kickoff return yard, needs 149 more to pass Kevin Williams (7,309) for eighth on the all-time career list.

• With 8,336 career total returns yards, needs 75 more to pass Tyrone Hughes for 12th on the career list.

K Phil Dawson…

• Would become the Browns all-time leader in field goals made with five more, passing Lou Groza (234).

RB Peyton Hillis…

• Has recorded a rushing touchdown in three consecutive games. With one more, he would be the first Browns player to record a rushing touchdown in four consecutive games since Greg Pruitt did it in five straight games in 1975.

OL Joe Thomas…

• Has started all 51 career games and had not missed an offensive snap since joining the Browns as the third overall

pick in the 2007 draft.

SUPER CHUMPS … Mark the upcoming Saints game as a Win.

For the third consecutive season, the Browns will face the defending Super Bowl champions, when they meet the Saints on Sunday, October 24 at the Louisiana Superdome. Cleveland has knocked off the defending Super Bowl champions in consecutive years after topping the Pittsburgh Steelers, 13-6, on December 10, 2009 and the New York Giants, 35-14, on October 13, 2008.

Let's start giving this team a little love ...

Well, here is another possible positive to take from things:

Last year the Browns first four games had the following results:

Minnesota 34 Browns 20

Broncos 27 Browns 6

Ravens 34 Browns 3

Bengals 23 Browns 20 OT

In the first three games their losing margin was by an average of 22 points.

This year, though they have also lost their first 3 games, it has been by a total of 12 points and an average of 4 points.

For what little solace it may be you can say that the Browns are performing better and being more competitive. Moral victories may not be worth spit, but we all did say that we just wanted the Browns to be more competitive than they were at the beginning of last year, and, indeed, they have by all objective standards. They had a hard climb, and though they didn't make it over the top, they certainly have been close. Ergo, if last year is any indication, perhaps they will take out the Bengals big time this week.

(Recall that the Bengals were given an absolute gift on that OT FG that won it for them. That sucker was bad. I would like to see the video of it)

Its pretty bad when we have to find positives within negatives bro...

But if there is two positives that can be taken from the negatives it is definitely that our defense is for real minus being short one good CB and one good FS..

And we have a real true AFCN style smashmouth running game...

Unfortunately thats all we have and without getting the WRs into the game our excellent running game will be shut down and we cannot win....

The ratbirds exploited a weakness last week and palmer is most certainly going to exploit it...even if we dont blitz its still available all day in 2 flavors...

How else do you find positives when seraching for them? Within other positives?

It sure hasn't been too often that we stopped any back from putting up 100+ on us. Game after game we made the weakest backs look great ... but now we are keeping things under-wraps, which also means that teams no longer have big leads and just run the ball to watch the clock tick (Hey look, another positive!).

We haven't had anyone run the ball this hard and fight for each and every yard, since Leroy Hoard.

Coming into the season all we had was Cribbs and his punt/kick returns. Now our O-line is being mentioned as one of the top groups in the NFL, and we have such as Hillis being listed among the top in their position even if for the week.

We had a weak spot last game, and already have a high draft pick that looks great so far, waiting in the wings at the same position and isn't being rushed in to be the saviour. Not to mention that in six career games against the Bengals, Eric Wright has recorded one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and seven passes defensed ... and will be facing Palmer again who hasn't looked all that precision as billed. Could be a great rebound game for Wright.

We have a three-headed football executive squad managing our team now, where Haden (good prospect waiting in the wings), Hillis (Free agent pick-up by the new staff, and Mack (drafted to compliment one of the best leftsides of the line in the NFL) ... we won't even mention the LB & DT acquisitions that have been the staple in not allowing a rushing TD or 100yr gainer the past five games.

GIPS won't be happy until the coaching staff is fired. c'mon when are you going to admit that WE ARE BETTER even if the record doesn't show it? don't worry, be happy! :)

Look for the first time since 99 we actually have competent management...................and the weakest link is the so called President of making sure he gets all the credit

Heckert and Mangini..........and co good job

The Bengals RB's rushed for 115 and 184 last year against us. That is the bad news!

The good news is they put up 142 and 146 last year in two games vs. the Ravens but only 94 this year.

Our streak of less then 100 rushing yards per games might just continue.

If the defense forces Palmer to try to beat us we will win this game.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Palmer has always been over-rated and he flat out sucks right now. I honestly expect the Browns to win this game in convincing fashion.

You can get that feeling that our first win is going to be over the Who-Dat this Sunday (Oops! I meant the Who-days). We have a stomping run game, a OL that's comming together, a defense that keeps us in the game in the 4th qtr. Negatives, sure we have them but a win this week will not be that big of a surprise.

I wouldn't say Palmer has always been overrated, but you can sure make the case he hasn't been the same QB since Von Cheapshotten took out his knee in that playoff game. The Bungle crowd has certainly been concerned about his performance so far this year.

Key- get pressure on him early and often- something we've yet been able to do.

No way is this a "trap" game for the Bengals- they've progressed far beyond that.
