Position Review: Wide Receivers

By Matt Florjancic, ClevelandBrowns.com Staff Writer

The Browns had good production from their young corps of wide receivers in 2010.

Overview:

With Chansi Stuckey, Brian Robiskie, Mohamed Massaquoi and Joshua Cribbs, the Browns had a young, yet productive group of wide receivers in 2010.

They combined for six touchdowns and 1,431 yards on 128 receptions. Stuckey, Massaquoi, Robiskie and Cribbs had 18 receptions that went for 20 or more yards and those big plays started in the season opener at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

During the first quarter of play, Jake Delhomme threw a 41-yard touchdown to Massaquoi. One week later, in the second quarter of the home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, Cribbs ran a post route over the middle of the formation and caught a 65-yard touchdown from Seneca Wallace. It was the Browns’ longest completion and second-longest offensive play of 2010.

Later in the season, Massaquoi registered 81 yards on four receptions in a 13-10 win over the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium December 5. Massaquoi caught passes of 37 and 33 yards in the third quarter of play.

On the road at Cincinnati, Robiskie caught the first touchdown on his NFL career, a 46-yarder that drew the Browns within two points in the waning minutes of the game.

One of the more interesting touchdowns of 2010 came when Massaquoi took a pitch from Peyton Hillis against the Baltimore Ravens. Massaquoi lofted a 29-yard pass into the end zone where Robiskie cradled it near the right sidelines of the East end of Cleveland Browns Stadium for the touchdown.

Outstanding Performer:

Robiskie caught only seven passes for 106 yards and no touchdowns during his rookie season in 2009. With the additions of quarterbacks Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and the development of rookie Colt McCoy, Robiskie showed progress in 2010.

Robiskie caught 29 passes for 310 yards and tied with tight end Benjamin Watson for the team lead with three touchdowns receptions.

Key Stat:

Three.

Massaquoi, Robiskie and Cribbs caught three touchdowns of longer than 40 yards. Cribbs hauled in the 65-yard touchdown in the Browns’ loss to the Chiefs. Robiskie caught a 46-yard touchdown at Cincinnati and Massaquoi corralled a 41-yard score in the season-opener at Tampa Bay.

What To Watch For:

The continued progress of the young wide receivers will be a key component to the development of the Browns offense in 2011. Robiskie and Massaquoi will be entering their third NFL seasons and will have another training camp of work with McCoy and the offense when the regular season begins.

The Browns also have Carlton Mitchell, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound wide receiver who did not have a reception, but had a nine-yard run during his rookie season out of the University of South Florida. Mitchell showed speed on that nine-yard run and an end-around in the preseason loss at the Detroit Lions in August. The son of a former professional basketball player and cut-woman for boxer Antonio Tarver, Mitchell brings size, speed and athleticism to the Browns.

I knew as soon as I read "The Browns had good production from their young corps of wide receivers in 2010" this whole article was thrash. Good for a laugh though.

Was this over 4 games or 16 games?

that's just funny.

some individual players post those stats in a single season.

Several. Brandon Lloyd 1,448 yards, 11 TDs. Roddy White 1,389- 10 TDs.

Yup, look for a serious upgrade at WR for the Browns in the off season.

Shurmur is said to be a throw first coach i really hope so but we have no WRs and our defense is falling apart from old age and the lack of dependability that comes with it..

Tom heckert is the guy with his balls to the wall in my opinion but for some reason i have great confidence he will solve the puzzle sooner rather than later..
