Guest mz.
From Rotoworld, quoting Clayton's Insider blog. ESPN's John Clayton suggests that Eric Mangini may actually be more of a candidate for the Browns' defensive coordinator job than as a head coach. Mangini's visit with owner Randy Lerner is being "billed" as a head coaching interview, but Clayton thinks Mangini could end up working under Josh McDaniels if Scott Pioli becomes Cleveland's GM. Clearly, Clayton doesn't believe their Spygate history has ruined Mangini and Pioli's relationship.
YtownBrownsBacker
Spygate was between Belichick and Mangini because Belichick badmouthed him for leaving after just one year as DC. Lerner is talking to Mangini and it could be to see if he is interested in the DC job. Remember Mangini has ties to this area. He is Mark Shapiro's brother-in-law and Shapiro and Pioli are very close friends.
Guest mz.
BTW, I'd be more than fine having Mangini as our DC.
Guest Aloysius
Perhaps Lerner wanted to interview Mangini because he needed to get a feel as to whether he can trust the guy. After all, Mangini screwed over the last organization he DC'ed for (see Spygate). Maybe the interview wasn't to lure Mangini in, but to make sure Lerner would be okay with Pioli's HC hiring the guy. Spygate was personal between Belichick and Mangini. Belichick badmouthed Mangini when he took the Jets jobs. He thought Mangini owed him because he made him DC and Mangini only stayed one year. He thought Mangini owed him because he made him DC and Mangini only stayed one year. There was a little more to it than that. Yes, Belichick was disappointed that Mangini was leaving after one year as DC to coach a division rival, but he was also upset that Mangini quietly tried to lure Patriot coaches & players away to New York. And I'm not sure it matters much that Mangini was lashing out at Belichick because of a personal spat. What happens if he & whoever ends up being our HC start bickering? If he goes elsewhere & starts dishing dirt on his old squad, it'll be our entire organization that suffers, not just our HC.
Jantz2086
Though Mangini seems pretty intriguing as our DC, I say end the baggage that could come with him and go with Pioli/Shanahan/BSchot/McDaniels or Pioli/McDaniels/BSchot/Schwartz

McDaniels is a DC not OC 2. I don't see why Schwartz would come laterally to here. He's looking for an upgrade.

Yeah, to which I'd add that if Shanahan were to come here, he'd hire an OC he has experience with & who employs his system. So Schottenheimer wouldn't make much sense. Broncos QB coach Jeremy Bates would be a good choice. He's been instrumental in developing Jay Cutler & called plays this season. Lane Kiffin tried to lure him to Tennessee, and Jay Cutler's begging for him to be retained now that Shanahan's been fired. Sounds like the kind of guy who'd be great to bring in to develop BQ. Pumpkin Eater
Shouldn't the new Head Coach and GM make the decisions about their coordinators? If Mangina is interviewing for DC, then that is ass backwards.
Squintz
Shouldn't the new Head Coach and GM make the decisions about their coordinators? If Mangina is interviewing for DC, then that is ass backwards. Unless the Pioli deal is already done and Lerner is simply wanting to know more about Mangini before Pioli hires him...... Perhaps we're looking at a blockbuster news conference where instead of propping Brady and JT up to speak it will be to introduce our new GM and coaches all at the same time! WPB Dawg Fan
Here is an interesting twist to all of this: Pioli very interested in Browns GM vacancy, Mangini and Crennel in Cleveland? Add a Comment December 30, 11:36 AM by Aaron Calafato, Cleveland Browns Examiner Cleveland Sports Radio 850 WKNR is reporting an associate of former New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini said Mangini would be interested in retaining Romeo Crennel as part of the 2009 Cleveland Browns coaching staff. This means there is a possibility that Eric Mangini could become the Browns next head coach. Also, the Plain Dealer reports that the Browns continue courting the Patriots Scott Pioli. It appears he is very interested in the position of Browns General Manager. If you remember, Pioli got his career started as a personal assistant for the 1992 Browns under Bill "Lucifer" Belichick. So, the Browns could have Eric Mangini, Romeo Crennel, and Scott Pioli as part of the 2009 Cleveland Browns, making them an reincarnation of the recent New England Patriots dynasty.
