Recap: Cleveland vs. Tennessee Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Matt Hasselbeck continued his career resurgence in Tennessee, throwing for 220 yards and three scores for the Titans, as they cruised to a 31-13 win over the Cleveland Browns. "That's what Matt's been doing for us, he's been finding the open receiver no matter who it is," Titans head coach Mike Munchak said of Hasselbeck. "He's been doing that for all four weeks he's been here." Tennessee (3-1) is off to its best start since 2008 when the Titans reeled off 10 wins to start that season before finishing at 13-3. Chris Johnson rushed for over 100 yards for the first time this season as he accumulated 101 yards on 23 carries. Jared Cook had 93 yards receiving on two catches, including an 80-yard score, while Nate Washington caught two balls for 57 yards. Jonathan Babineaux had a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Colt McCoy completed 40-of-61 passes for 350 yards and a touchdown for Cleveland (2-2), while Peyton Hillis ran for 46 yards on 10 carries. Hillis' counterpart, Montario Hardesty, had just 22 yards rushing on seven attempts. He had five catches for 49 yards, but dropped four passes. Greg Little was the leading receiver for Cleveland as he had 57 yards on six catches. Tennessee went three-and-out on its first possession and the Browns took over at their own 47-yard line. McCoy's 25-yard strike to Greg Little set up a 48-yard field goal by Phil Dawson to make it 3-0. On the Titans' next drive, Johnson beat Chris Gocong on the edge as he scampered for a 25-yard gain and Hasselbeck hooked up with Lavelle Hawkins for an 18-yard completion inside the Cleveland 15. Two plays later, the Titans capped off the six play, 60-yard drive when Craig Stevens hauled in a 12-yard TD pass. Later, Hardesty got open down the right sideline for a 27-yard gain. This led to Dawson's 51-yard field goal early in the second quarter. But Tennessee struck for an 80-yard score on the first play of its ensuing drive as Cook broke free down the sideline. Nearing the half, Hasselbeck made a nice touch throw to Washington as he picked up 57 yards to the Browns four-yard line. On the very next play, Damian Williams made an over-the-shoulder reception at the back left pylon, as the Titans took a 21-6 lead into the locker room. Rob Bironas added a third quarter field goal for the Titans to conclude an 11 play, 46-yard drive, as he connected on a 39-yard attempt. Colt McCoy led the Browns down the field on their ensuing possession, but a costly interception halted their momentum as Babineaux returned the pick 97 yards for the touchdown to make it 31-6. "He (McCoy) was clearly out of the pocket. The best thing to do there is to throw the ball away, not throw it late down the middle, which he knows," Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said of the interception. By pure stats you would think the Browns would have won or at least the game would have been quite close. See this: 1. Browns led in time of possession 36:53 to 23.07 2. Browns had 25 first downs to only 13 for Tenn. 3. Browns had 40% third down efficiency to only 33% for Tenn. 4. Browns completed about 66% of their passes to only 48% for Tenn. 5. Browns had 350 pass yards compared to only 220 for Tenn. 6. Each team only had 1 turnover, so there was no disparity in that stat 7. Tenn only had a 112 yd to 84 yd advantage in rushing yards 8. Browns gained 3.8 per rush, Tenn only had 3.9 per rush 9. Penalties were about even, 5 apiece for about 40 some yards each So? The question is: with the statistical analysis in many regards in the Browns favor or at least in parity with these stats.....what went wrong? What went wrong? I guess bad tackling cannot be easily statisticised. Most of Mccoy's passes were 5-6 yards over the middle. The sad part is Hasselbeck didn't really throw much further (maybe 7-10 yards downfield). The difference was their defense could tackle and ours couldn't. If I was Shurmur, I would have used Hillis a lot more too. Especially after Hardesty started looking like "brick hands" braylon and he was only going on short routes over the middle. I will assume Hillis was still not quite himself and give Shurmur the benefit of the doubt at this point. Another interesting point was Evan Moore still didn't get much playing time despite the return of Pashos. So much for the theory that Alex Smith was only playing the first few weeks because of our revolving door on the right side (I do realize Pashos isn't a pro bowler but he is better than what we had). The bye week should help McCoy and the receivers to get more reps in the new offense and hopefully Haden can heal in that time. I noticed Norwood got some reps at the end of the game but maybe only because Momass got banged up? I don't mind dink and dunk up the middle if it is for 6+ yards every time and not Brady Quinn's 2 yard throws. But we still have to throw it deep every now and then to keep the defense honest (and give Hillis more touches to help out in playaction like we did on our first drive). Final points. Based on the first 3 games I would say our defensive line is much improved at the pass rush. However yesterday we couldn't get a finger on Hasselbeck. But let's not forget that the Titan's offensive line is pretty darn good. Not to mention they have the best defense in the league (statistically so far) and they beat up the Ravens already too. Tough loss for us but still 2-2 on the year. Our next 4 games will be tough for us with 3 on the road: Oakland (Road), Seattle (home game we should win), SF (road), and Houston(road).
