APMuch like Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, Browns President Mike Holmgren was measured in his evaluation of Colt McCoy during his season-ending press conference.

“My opinion of Colt hasn’t changed,” said Holmgren. “He can be, could be [a franchise quarterback]. But I’m not ready to anoint Colt yet.”

Holmgren indicated that McCoy will face competition for the starting job this year. He wouldn’t want the competition to last throughout the whole preseason, but it sounds like the Browns will not enter 2012 with McCoy locked in as starter.

G.M. Tom Heckert indicated the team is going to be focused on improving the offense this offseason. Both men stressed that they will build through the draft, and not go crazy in free agency.

Some other notes from the press conference:

1. Holmgren said the team didn’t talk to former Vikings head coach Brad Childress about a job last year. They wouldn’t rule out hiring Childress as offensive coordinator this year.

2. The Browns pleaded with fans to be patient. Holmgren expects a better record next year and believes their drafts have been productive. Cleveland holds the No. 4 overall pick and Atlanta’s first round pick this year.

3. Cleveland may have gone 4-12 this year, but Holmgren won the longest post-season press conference championship again. 75 minutes. Take that, Lurie.
