Students angry over pricey courses pepper-sprayedBy SHAYA TAYEFE MOHAJER | Associated Press – 49 mins ago SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Campus police pepper-sprayed as many as 30 demonstrators after Santa Monica College students angry over a plan to offer high-priced courses tried to push their way into a trustees meeting, authorities said.

Raw video posted Tuesday evening on the Internet showed students chanting, "Let us in, let us in" and "No cuts, no fees, education should be free."

Students were angry because only a handful were allowed into the meeting, and when their request to move the meeting to a larger venue was denied, they began to enter the room, said David Steinman, an environmental advocate who is running for Congress as a Green Party candidate.

Two officers were apparently backed up against a wall, and began using force to keep the students out of the room. Steinman said both officers used pepper spray.

"People were gasping and choking," Steinman said.

Marioly Gomez, 21, said she was standing in a hallway outside the meeting with several hundred other students who wanted to get into the meeting.

"I got pepper-sprayed without warning," she said.

Santa Monica College spokesman Bruce Smith said he believed it was the first time pepper spray had been used to subdue students on campus.

"It was the judgment of police that the crowd was getting out of hand and it was a safety issue," he said.

Trustee David Finkel called on campus officials to look into Tuesday evening's events.

"I think it gave the college a black eye which I know it didn't deserve and certainly didn't need," he said.Video of a similar incident at UC Davis in November, in which an officer doused a row of student protesters with pepper spray as they sat passively, drew worldwide attention. It became a rallying point for the Occupy movement.

Firefighters were called to the campus at about 7:20 p.m. Five people were evaluated at the scene and two were taken to a hospital, Santa Monica Fire Department Capt. Judah Mitchell said. Their conditions were not known, but the injuries were not believed to be serious, Mitchell said.

Students have been upset over a new plan that involves the formation of a nonprofit foundation which would offer core courses for about $600 each, or about $200 per unit — about four times the current price. The program is designed to cope with rising student demand as state funds dwindle.

The move has raised questions about whether it would create two tiers of students in a system designed to make education accessible to everyone and whether it's even legal under state education law.

Community colleges statewide have lost $809 million in state funding over the past three years, causing schools to turn away about 200,000 students and drastically cut the number of classes offered.

Trustee Louise Jaffe said during the meeting that she doesn't believe the students want to listen.

"We spoke for four hours and we weren't understood," she said.

This is a growing problem, the cost of a College degree has been skyrocketing the last 10-15 years. Many college students end up owing a ton of student loan debt that they will carry with them for the next 15-20 years. While I don't agree that it should be free it shouldn't set someone back decades to try to have an oppurtunity to have a good paying job.

"Since 1982, the average cost of attaining a college degree has increased by 439%, while the typical familys income increased by only 147% during the same time period"My link

lazy kids need to get a job and pay or find a community college where its cheaper.

Not sure how old you are Bunker but times have changed. My Dad(in his 60's) when he went to college was able to pay off the yearly bill by work part/full time. When I went to college(in my 30's) working a full time job I still had to take loans out to pay for school currently the average cost of a 4yr college program is $21k a year(private and public) I don't know of too many just out of Highschool jobs that pay enough money for a kid to pay that tution, plus a little more for living expenses(car insurance etc) and allow them time to study.

I used the 4yr since many programs require a 4yr degeree anymore.

As goofy as Bunker is, woodpecker, he is smarter and a better poster than you.

You suck. Peck on that. And college does not make someone intelligent. Nor all that smart.

Obamao is a stupidass non-student of history, and he is wanting to make the same

mistakes here in our U.S.A.

All sorts of people with no or little college could have gone on to become

a dipsy, sissy little parrot woodpecker if their situations had been different,

or a certain career/trade didn't come to fruition.

The time to stop your and Heck's stupidass personal low blow attacks is a few years ago. You're late.

I don't believe you are smart enough to farm.

You don't have any common sense, and you are a kid with little life experience to go on.

You just parrot what your party says to parrot, and you don't know why.

Stop your squawking.

"Woodpecker want a cracker? Squawk !"

The fundamental question that should be asked is Why the Fuck is college expensive in the first place? While it is seems silly in the first place that education is that expensive, that does not give the students the right to just protest. The smarter thing will be to find a different college somewhere where they can afford it.

I think this WAS the cheap, community college in the area and they increased the price of a bunch of basic classes even though they said they were only going to increase premium classes. So they may not have another option for where to attend college.

I'm not really sure about all of that, that's just what I've heard. You can take the time to look up info if you want

I wonder if online college will be the choice in the future, and except for the higher paying professional careers that college can deliver, trade and tech schools offer great 2 yr degrees that often get that person right to work after they graduate.

Anyone who doesn't agree with him is by default a democrat/liberal/hippie/commie/socialist.

That is sad. When people realize that politicians will fuck people regardless of what party they are from, will people actually start stop believing them.

I'm sure that is the future. Atleast if the job market is good and we can earn back the money that we spend then it is worth the high price, but now even that is a huge question mark.

Ever wonder if to save money these online classes will move to a foreign country and u will actually get a degree in Electronics or whatever from the University of Indonesia while sipping some tea in Alabama ?

I'm fortunate enough that my parents/grandparents saved up a ton of money to pay for my education. I should be able to make it through 8 semesters easy. Add in the fact my sister only went to Akron one semester and now is at Tri C while she focuses on a career around dancing (has a bunch of auditions coming up) so what was saved for her can be used on me if need be. Also I am ahead of schedule to graduate so I am going to be spending one semester co-oping (so you only pay for 7). Then finally add in that I have offered to give any money I make interning/co-oping to my parents for my education (ME average from Michigan is about $3800 a month). Add all that together and I am in a very fortunate situation. I'm also still going for scholarships and the like but Michigan does not like giving money to out of state students, or white male engineers.

Oh, the total cost for everything for one year here is like $48k

Loans would suck too but the unemployment rate for engineers nationwide is under 2% and probably even lower for Michigan grads. I don't plan on getting my masters now so I would be able to work right away. Our career dept. lists the average starting slarary for ME at $63k

At least 1 reason education is so expensive is because it's subsidized.

Like medicine or car repair from the insurance company to warranty work on your guitar.

Charge as much as you can because you're going to be paid a percentage of that. And the government pays a lot better even than that! And why not? It's somebody else's money right?

I know more then 1 idiot going to college on the government's dime. they are taking and passing courses. a monkey could succeed at.

But what the hell? The school needs the money.

I guarantee you no matter how untalented your kid is I can find something he can play if you give me 200 bucks a lesson.

Also a reason for failure is that too many kids who have never been asked to be responsible for anything and go to college while mom and dad pick up the tab think that just a degree will buy them success.

Hence noone, or at least too few picks a non glamorous career and tries to figure out the best way to get into it.

So theyre stunned that there aren't any 150,000 dollar jobs for a sociology bachelors.

Something needs to change. College costs have raised above the level of inflation, the whole damn thing is for rich people, as it puts anyone else who takes loans out in pretty crippling debt. The financial aid offered is a joke, and no one gets taught any better in high school. It was around my sophomore year when I realized that if I fuck up too badly, not only do I fuck myself, but also everyone who co-signed my loans (my family). From that point on it was sink or swim. Luckily for me, I was good enough to cut it in the sciences where jobs are a bit more easily found. Long story short, I'm still in school, but this time they're paying me. Unfortunately for me, this isn't enough to put any kind of dent into my $100k in student debt. Oh well, hopefully I'll be making more than the interest when I'm finally out that I could pay it off in a reasonable amount of time.
