I'm pretty ignorant of the why's and whetefores of dentistry. Amalgam is perfectly safe as a filling material. You'd need over 300 hundred fillings to come close to an amount that causes people who have a mercury allergy to react to it. Drilling out a perfectly good amalgam (silver) filling exposes you to more mercury vapor than placing the initial filling anyway.
