blowe
I liked the analogy of the cheetah and the gazelle in the beginning. It's a true statement and there will always be predators out there. We cannot control that because it is in our human nature. Don't tread on me.
calfoxwc
Wow. I have not heard a more brilliant speech about gun control, maybe about anything else in a long time. Don't Tread on Me. I think I'm going to order my "Don't Tread on Me" tshirt from the NRA this week instead of waiting. Speaking of waiting, I still am waiting for my NRA gift for re-joining. The backlog is HUGE - I'm waiting for a few extra weeks more because so many people have joined. That is right after I order my Duck Dynasty shirt that says "Hey, hey ! All of my stories are 95 % True" with a good pic of "Uncle Si" on the back.......
calfoxwc
Maybe..... I'll also order myself a Duck Dynasty duck call, so I can carry it with me, and use it whenever Obamao comes on TV because as "president", he's a quack......

calfoxwc
Nah, I took it as "the lib people who were all riled up about gun control have nothing to say about THIS."
calfoxwc
Seriously. Gun control is a farce of any kind of solution: ***************************************************************** IRREFUTABLE SOCIALISTIC GOVERNMENTS HISTORICAL FACTS A LITTLE GUN HISTORY… In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million. I am truly sorry that a crazy man took the life of your child and we cannot have your tragedy become ours.
gftChris
I'm still not fully sold one way or the other (not that it matters, I don't live in the US as yet), but I feel obliged to point out the faulty logic of his cheetah/gazelle metaphor. Yes, you take away the hooves and horns of the gazelle, but you're also taking away the claws and teeth of the cheetah. You're not just stripping the prey of any weapons. Honestly, there are so many guns now in the USA that maybe gun control would be pointless, and the majority of people convicted would be normal, otherwise law abiding people. If you were to physically remove all guns from existence then yeah, sure, gun control would be perfect, but with the amount of guns floating around, criminals would always find a way to get guns. Another point he made about only seeing the bad that guns do, when we see the good in hammers and doctors - hammers and doctors are designed with good intentions, the hammer helps to build a house, the doctor saves lives. Guns only have one purpose. Squeeze the trigger and, assuming you're a half decent shot, watch someone (or something) fall down and die. If you're so concerned about self defence, perhaps everyone should carry a tazer? Or make it so that only rubber bullets (or other, safer alternatives)? No. Thats exactly the point of the logic. the criminals (predators) would not be abiding by the laws anyway. Therefore you've not removed their claws and teeth based on your correct statement below. If concealed weapons on every citizen is the answer then the question deserves some serious scrutiny. I'd still say a weapon free society (not just guns, weapons) is something to strive for, but going cold turkey could potentially be very dangerous. On the other hand, I'm all for people going hunting and things, so guns there are perfectly fine in my mind! Genuine question, where are most of the guns made? Is it one of these national pride things to buy an American gun, or are they all mass produced in China or somewhere?

I believe America is responsible for something like 1/3 of the guns made in the world, but I haven't researched it in a while. It just sticks out to me as something I remember hearing. gftChris
So there's probably an even bigger economic impact on gun control as well then, besides the business that would lose out if guns were banned.

Then again one particular industry stands to reap profit every time something else is outlawed. Especially things that lots and lots of citizens want to do... Here is an interesting collection of numbers. http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/local/the_intelligencer_news/opinion/letters_to_editor/gun-control-article-ignores-overall-violent-crime/article_8057cd33-84e6-55b8-8478-e0e2224632fb.html We do not need ccw on all of our citizens, just enough to make a potential criminal wary. The less weapons a society has the more empowered a criminal is. Because they have a mindset exactly like that of a predator. They are going to target the weakest slowest moving target because it is the easiest. Guns throw a wrench in that dynamic because that little person may very well have a tool that allows them to be dangerous to the predator. Thus modifying their behaviour(like targeting empty houses) rather than tangling with people. Large population centers in the US with very strict gun laws tend to bear out this notion as well. Chicago has an incredible rate of gun violence and is one of the strictest gun control cities in our country.
