The Gipper
Per a conversation on another thread I have put this together. It is the number of Finals made by decade by teams from each city. It is a cumulative total for each town in that decade for the 4 major sports. Just a few notes: Baseball goes back to the 1900. Hockey goes back to 1917. Football back to 1933 when the first playoff was held. Basketball back to 1946. I am only giving the total for each town. Leagues include: MLB/NBA/ABA/NFL/AFL/AAFC/NHL/WHL 1900s: (Baseball only): Chicago 5 appearances Pittsburgh: 4 Detroit: 4 New York: 4 Boston 2 Philly 2 1910s: (Baseball and 3 years of NHL): Boston: 5 Philly: 5 New York: 5 Chicago: 4 Montreal: 2 Cincinnati: 1 Toronto: 1 Ottawa: 1 1920s: (Baseball and hockey only): New York: 13 Ottawa: 6 Montreal: 4 Washington: 2 Pittsburgh: 2 St. Louis: 2 Toronto: 2 Boston: 2 Chicago: 1 Cleveland: 1 Philly: 1 Hamilton: 1 1930s: (Baseball, hockey and partial NFL) New York: 21 Chicago: 8 Detroit: 6 Toronto: 6 Boston: 4 Green Bay: 3 Montreal: 3 St. Louis: 3 Philadelphia: 2 Cincinnati: 1 1940s: Baseball, Football, Hockey, and partial NBA: New York: 15 Chicago: 10 Cleveland: 6 Boston: 6 Detroit: 6 Philly: 5 St. Louis: 5 Washington: 5 Montreal: 4 Toronto: 3 Cincinnati: 1 Baltimore: 1 Minnesota: 1 LA: 1 Green Bay: 1 San Francisco: 1 Buffalo: 1 1950s: New York: 20 Montreal: 10 Cleveland: 8 Detroit: 8 Minnesota: 5 Toronto: 4 Boston: 4 LA: 4 Syracuse: 3 Philadelphia: 2 Baltimore: 2 Milwaukee: 2 Chicago: 2 Ft. Wayne: 2 Rochester: 1 St. Louis: 1 1960s: (Includes MLB/NBA/ABA/NFL/AFL/WHL Boston: 11 New York: 10 LA: 10 St. Louis: 7 Detroit: 5 Montreal: 5 Green Bay: 5 San Diego: 4 Chicago: 4 Toronto: 4 Houston: 3 Baltimore: 3 San Francisco: 3 Philly: 2 Oakland: 2 Kansas City: 2 Cleveland: 2 Buffalo: 2 Pittsburgh: 2 Minnesota: 2 Cincinnati: 1 New Orleans: 1 Indy: 1 Dallas: 1 This takes up to the 60s. The Gipper
New York is rocking with 88 champ banners These are just Finals appearances. That cities actual title count is I believe 59. : 35 in baseball, 11 in hockey(the city's total includes the entire area, so "New Jersey" is included), 9 in football, 4 in basketball.
