THE BROWNS BOARD

Pre-Season Impressions of the Rest of the N F L

Been spending time watching at least the first teams in all the games... Here are a few observations.

General

  • Penalties are down - Either the officials are letting them play more or the players are better preapared... or both. Especially noteworthy are a lack of "Helmet-to-Helmet" penalties.
  • The old "Defense is ahead of the Offense early" adage does not seem to apply this year. In most Wk 1 games, the running game seemed ahead of D with passing games bringing up the rear.

AFCN

  • Rumors of the Raven's Defensive demise may be greatly exaggerated. Canty looks to be a great addition. Huff is no Ed Reed, but a serviceable Safety.
  • The 2013 Bengals may well be better than last year's squad... on both sides of the ball.
  • Same cannot be said for the Steelers... Ben and the 1st team Offense looked good, but the D? Not so much...

AFC-Other

  • The Pat's Mallet was looking like a Brady clone until he got his bell rung.
  • Rex Ryan began his final year as Jets' HC... He may not make it through the full season.
  • Houston looks ready to make their SB run. Their 1st Rounder (Hopkins - WR) has the look of an explosive addition.
  • KC looked like a team to watch in Reed's debut. Smith looks like he's ready to go.
  • You have to be an idiot OC, if you call a pass play with Terrell Pryor as your QB... Oakland's OC is an idiot.
  • Buffalo looks posed to push the read-offense approach to the max.... Ugh...

NFC

  • Aren't the Giants good like every other year? Looks like this will be a good year.
  • Dallas' revamped 4-3 looked awesome... but then there's the Rom-O-ffense...
  • Arizona? Good? Found the key to the Carson Palmer time capsule? Nah... can't be...
  • Is it better to play fast or well? Watch Philly for the answer...

Everyone who was saying that is an idiot. Their front 7 is better than it was last year. Ray Lewis had lost a step or two, and they upgraded from Kruger to Dumervil. The only question about their defense is if the rookies are going to step up.

Yes, you have to hand it to Ozzie Newsome. Their DL with Ngata and Dumerville, plus Canty and Suggs could be as good as ever.

And Harbaugh is a good coach.

But, the real question will be loss of leadership...in Lewis/Reed/Boldin. These guys may have been worth more than just what their skill level was. Can they replace that? Hard to say yes....when, in my opinion, it was that leadership....and NOT the skills they demonstrated that got them that SB win last year.

If that Superbowl playoff tournament were played 1000 times by a computer, I suggest that the Ravens would not win more than 5 or 10 % of the time.

mallet is a brady clone.....too bad we didn't make that trade before the draft......

what happened to the new rule that the running back wasn't allowed to lead with his helmet when smelling contact? saw plenty of that so far this preseason......did they get rid of that rule?

buffallo will suck again this year just like we will.

I watched the Stoolers 1st team Def get burned deep. Palumalaiuagfeu got his ASS handed to him and he just fell down.

Re-watched the 1st half of the Pat's game... Mallet missed a couple easy throws, but got hot... so may be a DNA gene pair or two away from a perfect clone, but impressed me nonetheless... looked very poised. That said... if he was concussed by the hit that sent him to the sidelines, then he's a tad on the fragile side...

I haven't noticed any no calls on the RB rule...
