THE BROWNS BOARD

Total Defensive Points Allowed

After the 41-10 loss to the Bengals this weekend, the Browns' defensive ppg dropped from 21.8 (top 10) to 23.8 (17th).

What's interesting is that, although it's total "defense" ppg allowed, special teams and turnovers for TD's are counted into the total ppg.

Does anyone know of any sabermetric or true statistic that only takes in account points given up by the defense? It seems a bit unfair to judge a defense's ppg allowed while including points given up by the offense and special teams. Obviously it doesn't only affect the Browns as defensive and special teams TD's happen every week, but I would be interested to see where the Browns' defense stands when only taking into account points given up while on defense.

In fairness, they only scored 14 points directly from special teams/defence. Admittedly, those two set up two more touchdowns, with about 20 yards to go, but the D still had a chance to hold them to field goals.

Not holding the D responsible, but saying that's probably what they've taken in to account. Things you can put on the D - not tackling gresham for his TD. That was shocking. Things on O - the INT to harrison that set up the TD; the fumble from Ogbonnaya for the TD. JC not hitting little for a TD - not quite the same, but still a 7 point loss (or 4, can't remember if we got the FG). Special teams gets the two blocked punts that ended up in TDs.
