I small gun shop owner, full time city policeman, was telling me that the Walther sp? .280 had a very nice easy slide pull, was a great gun with less kick for women who really don't like the 9mm kick and harder pull of a lot of semi-autos. 9mm really don't have much kick, basically a .38 cal. Osiris Posted June 24, 2014 Report Share Posted June 24, 2014 Not that I want to argue for more guns (though I don't oppose people having them in their own homes for self defense), but the advantage of a shotgun over a handgun for home defense is that a shotgun is a superior close quarters weapon. Imagine you are trying to deter/defeat an intruder in your home, in which you are likely to make contact in a room or hallway. A shotgun shell will send pellets out in a cone, increasing the chances that a relatively unskilled marksman will hit their target with at least a portion of the shot. And to the point, if you're going to allow guns for defence of your home (which I'm not wholly against), a shotgun would probably be a better deterrent than a 9mm, although if you consider the case posted here a couple of weeks ago of the daughter being taken hostage, the 9mm had advantages over the shotgun there. You might get lost and injured in the woods, hoarse, and not be able to fire three shots as an "I'm HERE, come find me" signal. That would be like having your car only work in your driveway. So when injured in the woods, hoarse from lack of water, you need to send out a big loud noise to attract attention? Right, fair enough. And the only way you can do that is with a gun? Let's say it's raining, lightning pouring down... your car quits running if you pull out of your driveway.... and you walk all the way to work instead, you could get hit by lightning, or catch pneumonia. Or malaria, even. But cars are only good for one thing, going forward and running over stuff. You don't need all that protection all the way to work.... Anyways, Chris, I thought it was funny, so..... the car in the driveway thing was the funniest that I could come up with... However, let's say you were canoeing...and...you flipped your canoe. Horn batteries gone. Can't light a fire. Broke two ribs so you can't blow your whistle, and besides, it gurgles because it got water in it. Outdoor survival is serious business, ya know.
