Not really what they intended, they just did not want to be a theocracy or something similar, and knew how much the Vatican tried to run Europe in the centuries prior. They where almost all religious and wanted Christianity to play a part, but we as a society have moved further from religion and as such the term separation of church and state has been coined and imo for the better.
