Cleveland Browns re-sign safety Mike Adams

by Mary Kay Cabot / Plain Dealer Reporter

Thursday March 05, 2009, 8:47 PM

File PhotoSean Jones is scheduled to visit the Eagles on Friday.

The Browns re-signed safety Mike Adams to a three-year deal Thursday, his agent Peter Schaffer said. A source said it's a $4.1 million deal.

Adams had also visited the Packers and Patriots.

Originally signed by the Browns as a free agent in April 2007, Adams started five games for the Browns last season and played in 14.

With fellow free-agent safety Sean Jones visiting the Eagles Friday, Adams becomes a leading candidate for a starting safety job. Last season, he started the opener in place of Brodney Pool (concussion) and the next four games in place of Jones, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery.

He finished the season with 42 tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Adams (5-11, 195), is a sixth-year pro who was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by San Francisco in 2004 out of Delaware. Adams, also a key special teams player, finished second on the team in 2007 with 18 special teams tackles.

Good move.

Not a big guy, but he plays smart. Glad he's back.

He is solid and versatile depth. He's a better backup safety but he played the nickel fairly well last year when called on.

I'm very up in the air about brining Jones back. Not quite sure who we could get if he doesn't come back though? I think some type of change needs to happen in the secondary. Wright and McDonald are set (maybe BMAC gets moved to nickel...but, I still think he will keep getting better)...maybe something new at the safety spot, I dunno?

Pressure up front will DEFINITELY help these guys.

I wonder if the signing has anything to do with Mangini wanting to test Cribbs at safety?

I certainly would like to see that. I think the WildDawg/flash packages are done. Defenses are pretty smart and pretty fast. None of the teams that ran that offense went very far into the playoffs.

Sean Jones is a good player, and I wouldn't mind seeing him back. I just don't think he's the big-hitter the browns need. JC might give them that.

I can't lie I would be sad to see Jones go, but like somebody said this could set the stage for Cribbs playing saftey.

How good though could he be at playing saftey his first year? Could he digest the playbook?

I dunno, it's a risk. But Cribbs is first and foremost a football player in the truest sense of the word, if anybody could make that change it's him

I concur. It is exciting to think about but also a huge risk. If anyone can do it...Cribbs is the guy. If he became a good starting safety I guarantee his jersey sales become the highest of active Browns.

I'm confused by all this Cribbs nonsense. Why in the hell do we want to take the ball out of the hands of our best playmaker and relegate him to try to learn and play one position?

None of it makes sense to me, the dude has asthma and can only do so much. You tell me he really makes the switch to safety and he is no longer doing anything else, and that's only if he can make the switch if you know what I mean. I applaud your guys' thoughts on this, but I say hell no emphatically to this idea. It reeks of desperation.

Cribbs isn't really much more dynamic on offense than any other player. (That we have seen so far).

I mean he can be used in gimmicks on offense but he's not even in there for more than 6 snaps a game..... Why in the world could he not continue to do that?

If he can take one back 100 yards to the house, he can play safety without his asthma acting up too bad. He was on the field for every offensive snap except punts in college.. its not like he can't breathe.

Yea. I mean, he played college QB and ran the ball just as much (if not more) than he threw. He can manage.

Fact of the matter is we need a guy of his energy and speed on the field more often. He is an average WR and we can easily find a KR or PR specialist to take some reps from him.

He used to be a Quarterback, the playbook should not be a problem. In fact he may become the quarterback of the defense much like russell was
