NFL Draft 3.0, now with tradesApril 9, 2009 at 12:09 am by Mark McGuire

A new week, a new mock NFL Draft. Why not throw in a few trades?

The thing about projecting trades is they almost never, ever go down as expected. That said, here is a look at one way the draft could unfold. (Use the draft value chart or your imagination for trade compensation not involving players.) Again, this is not a final projection, but rather just one scenario:

1. DETROIT LIONS: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia. The quarterback is settled into the top slot following a strong Pro Day.

Stafford goes No. 1 (AP)

2. ST. LOUIS RAMS: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor. Pretty locked in to being one of the top two selections.

3. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: Aaron Curry, ILB, Wake Forest. The perfect match of value and need.

4. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia. With one of the two top offensive tackles still on the board, the Hawks pass on Michael Crabtree and B.J. Raji. Is Mark Sanchez an option here?

5. **projected trade: JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (from Cleveland Browns): Michael Crabtree, WR. Texas Tech. Jaguars jump to get a promising big-time receiver. (Note: The Browns keep this pick if they deal Braylon Edwards.)

6. **projected trade TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (from Cincinnati Bengals): Mark Sanchez, QB, USC. Bucs don’t take a chance on Denver taking Sanchez.

7. OAKLAND RAIDERS: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College. A wide receiver is tempting here, but the draft is deep in them, and Raji has Top-5 talent.

8. **projected trade: CLEVELAND BROWNS (from Jaguars): Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas. The Browns get a pass rusher they gladly would have taken at No. 5.

My Question is What would we get in return for this trade down?

And then I read this article and thought If we really were going after Orakpo, This would be a gamble and would the new administration (Mankok) really take a Savage type gamble?

Browns not guaranteed to land Orakpo

The Cleveland defense finished the 2008 season tied for next to last in the NFL in sacks with 17, and the Browns will undoubtedly be looking to upgrade their pass-rush in the upcoming NFL draft. Many draft experts believe that University of Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo will be the Browns’ choice with the fifth overall selection in the draft.

The only question is will he be available when the Browns make their selection?

There is a strong possibility the Kansas City Chiefs could throw a monkey wrench in the team’s draft day program.

The Chiefs, who own the third overall pick, have a serious need for a pass rusher after losing Jared Allen to the Minnesota Vikings before the ’08 season. Not to mention Kansas City’s defense finished the season ranked 32nd in sacks with 10. On top of that the Chiefs are converting to a 3-4 defense this season, making Orakpo a perfect fit due to his versatility to play D-end and outside linebacker. He played a lot of both positions in college.

Orakpo visited Kansas City on April 1, and the buzz coming out of Chiefs’ camp is the organization came away quite impressed with the draft’s premiere pass rusher.

I’m told that the Chiefs’ new defensive coordinator, Clancy Pendergast, has very high interest in what the player brings to the table on defense.

As for the Browns, they have invested a lot of time in edge-rushers. The team held a private workout with Orakpo on March 18, and apparently was impressed with what they saw. He is scheduled to come to Cleveland on April 14.

According to one NFL scout, Orakpo showed tremendous athleticism and overall skills going through drills at both positions at his pro day last month, solidifying his top-five status.
