Pretty much anybody who travels along the border will realize that we need a wall - it can be pretty scary in some of those border towns. A wall will obviously be much more expensive and it seems like the cartels will fuck with it. An easy defeat is shape charges of which the cartrls eill have no problem acquiring. So surveillance of yhe other side will have to be exhaustive. With a huge moat with steep embankments it will take a dedicated operation to get over it. One that takes alot of time which would potentially allow drone surveillance to see it. Trump is sold on the wall idea cause it will be an edifice to his ego. So a halfway good idea will likely fail.
