The Gipper
No Trivia this week, I will be traveling later, so I give you this: All this talk about the Chicago Cubs and their 108 year drought. Well, as far as I am concerned, that can be a bit misleading. Consider this: the Chicago White Sox just won a World Series in 2005. So, its not like the city of Chicago hasn't had a baseball championship in the very recent past. People of Chicago have the choice to support one team or another....or they can support both. So don't feel bad for Chicago just because one of their teams has gone so long. Washington, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Houston cities have actually endured baseball droughts of over 50 years. Washington has the longest in a sense. They have not had a winner since 1924. But, for 33 years, from 1971 to 2004 they never had a team. Cleveland has the longest drought of any city that has fielded a team....67 years. Just counting years with a team, Washington does still have a 58 year drought. Here are the 5 teams in each league that have gone the longest without a championship: NBA: Kings (in Rochester/Cinci/KC/Sacramento) Hawks (in St. Louis/Atlanta Nuggets Suns Clippers (in Buffalo/SD/LA) Note: The Cavs were tied for 5th longest drought when it broke this year) NFL: Cardinals (in Chicago/St. Louis/Phoenix area) Lions Eagles Vikings Titans/Oilers (in Houston and Nashville) NHL: Maple Leafs Blues Sabres Canucks Coyotes (in Winnipeg and Phoenix) MLB: Cubs/Indians ....one of which will be broken Rangers (in Wash and Texas) Astros Padres Brewers (in Seattle and Milwaukee) Nationals/Expos (in Montreal and Washington)
The Gipper
Overall sports droughts. These are the cities that have waited the longest now without any major sports championships. Vancouver...since 1915 when they won the Stanley Cup in the NHA (precursor to NHL) (but note....they did not have a team in the NHL from 1917 to 1970 Ottawa...since 1927....But note, also Ottawa did not have an NHL team from 1934 to 1992. San Diego...since 1963. Chargers won 1963 AFL title...no SD has won since Buffalo...since 1965. Bills won AFL.... Salt Lake City....since 1971 when now defunct Stars won the ABA title Milwaukee....since 1971 when Bucks won NBA.....but.....this may have to be qualified as Milwaukee considers Packers their football team.
