THE BROWNS BOARD

The real Crisis 25 years new high

I've made sacrifices, I had a balance on a credit card I've stopped paying, I've stopped making payments on my car and bought a '99 Saturn to use. Pumpkin Eater

OUCH. Except for farming, we'd be in the same situation.

T's right, a garden could bring you a lot of groceries, I take it you

aren't out in the country...

It's pitiful you can't get help with your mortgage. I thought Obama provided funds to fix that...

Sell your car, but your credit card is a huge problem. It will keep accruing interest owed, and that,

could balloon to an amount it will take years to get out from under.

I don't know... can you borrow a second mortgage on the value of your home you've paid off?

If you're around farms, you could work for a farmer... maybe. He could probably use an extra tractor

driver this time of year.

That's really tough. I hope somebody who's an expert can get to ya.

Well Cal, I actually took your lead and stared a garden, nothing close to what you do, but it is something. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. I think you also told me about the plant hangers, those are kick ass and can use them all year round. Or was that WSS.

Sorry to hear that Pumpkin. There are millions out there in Student Loans. I had to take out loans for school, or I couldn't go. I could buy a small house from what I owe. Grants are hard to come by, but loans are always there. Check it out.

I've planted 415 tomato plants so far.

Just about fell asleep in the garden last night.

Can't wait to start on the peppers.

But it'll be more produce in a garden

than anybody's ever seen in these parts.

The beginning is tough.

Wholey shit, I'll give you props on that one. I guess storing it will be a pain in the ass, but worth it. Dude are you going to be able to eat all of that or will you sell some of it? I got like 10 plants and I was thinking that was too much for me and my girl. You got to post some pics.

thats going to be a lot of tomatoes, you sure out did me we have a little over 100 plants in the ground alone, the same with the peppers the other night I went out to the garden and got every thing I needed for a salad other than the tomatoes, even added some radishes. Best salad I have had in a long time.

Allready froze some green beans that were picked last saturday, I think Im going to throw some more seeds in the ground. Beans grow fast and I want to make sure I have enough to can & freeze to be able to feed a couple of families.

I forgot to take pics of the greenhouse with all the flats filled with big plants.

Almost done with tomatoes. Peppers will go quick.

I'll take pics and upload them later, when the garden gets going.

We bought three professional corrugated steel plant stands, each one has

three shelves, with a bar across the top.

Two are in the greenhouse, and one is for farmer's markets.

Old farmer down the way owes us several hundred bucks for the soybeans -

(they didn't get picked until Feb), he stopped by. I drove our ATV over and he was

kidding me about the biggest garden in Ohio...

When the maters' and peppers are all done, and all the seeds are done, I told my

wonderful cute Wife I'm hitting our jaccuzi for an entire day, and if our friends drop by,

just tell em I have plenty of suds so come in and say "hi"...

squash, spinach, pumpkins, collards, cucumbers, sweet corn, a few herbs, lettuce,

birdhouse gourds, many different types of heirloom tomatoes and peppers.

One tomato from Belgium? produces a 3 lb tomato. But my two favorite peppers are

sweet banana and Hungarian Wax semi-hots.

My whole body hurts. I think we'll start with a produce stand out in the front yard.

My hands look like I have been juggling over ripe black walnuts in the husk for two days.

This garden should win some kind of award...

Last year, we gave all our friends and neighbors so much stuff we didn't bother to sell any.

Lots of donations, but...

So, we went hugely overboard with learning which varieties we want to specialize in next year.

I still need to spray our fruit trees in the morning.... and it's going on 1 AM....

Hey Cal. I bought the Topsie Turvey, but my girl mentioned that there is a hanging plant that you can plant stuff on the top of it. So have a hanging tomato plant then have say carrots grow on top? As the local farmer genius here, do you know anything about this, I looked on the internet and can't find anything. Thanks

I like the fact of indoor gardening. Plus, years of car accidents, it's hard as shit to bend over. I have a Sun porch and can grow in the winter, at least I think I can?

I don't know about the planting stuff on the top...

but you certainly can grow stuff on your sun porch.

I"ll check with my brother-in-law...

he grows strawberries in fertilized water. Amazing.

BTW, Drug Mart, if you have one around, sells some great

Shultz fertilizer at a great price...

Meanwhile, I've planted so many tomato plants and peppers,

my hands are bruised. It hurt to play cards at our friend's picnic

for goodness' sake. (almost done... over 600 tomatoes... still have

a lot of peppers to do.

But it will be cool later.

(had to get up and turn the water off, I forgot...)

I'm not too worried about my credit card. If I can't pay it, I can't pay it ( I can't). I'm going to plant a small garden, but not a lot of the traditional veggies grow in FL this time of year. Mostly peppers, maybe some onions, perhaps garlic (not sure how it would grow) I might be able to get some strawberry plants and blueberry bushes.

PE - you can check into some of the heirloom tomatoes...

we are growing a type that grows 3 lb tomatoes... we'll see.

"Golden Girl" is supposed to be a well balanced acid/taste tomato...

A great looking plant is "kellog's Breakfast", low acid, great taste, so they say...

You can also look into certain high health herbs, like parsely. It is great for

making a high health benefit juice.

But more than anything else, you never know where you might get a job...

a Lowe's or Home Depot, or like I did for year... Best Buy ....

Blue Lake green beans are a prolific bush or vine, excellent stuff.

You could grow your own apple tree or lemon tree there in that climate...

Hope it all works out great !
