PoeticG
22,500 for one year... what would that equate to in today's money? Doesn't sound like a lot for the best player the world has ever seen...
Ghoolie
The Browns were originally named the Cleveland Ottos. Then they changed it to Browns when they drafted Jim Browns.

ballpeen
The average wage in 1954 was $3100 per year, so he was doing pretty good for the times. Especially considering it a half year job. Those guys did other things in the off season, and probably got paid better than the average Joe by selling cars, or pimping beer, or whatever. One of the guys from our wine club played for the Redskins in 1954. (don't know if he was a starter or not, Marvin was very low key about it) He made $4,000. To give you an idea of inflation- in 1950 you could buy a 4 bedroom house on Long Island for $12,500. A decent car was around $1,000. Early 60s Jim Brown was the first NFL player to crack the $100,000 barrier. Left for Hollywood, because movie stars were making more than that at the time.
