Beautiful drive right down the middle, followed closely by the putter head. Would usually shoot 110, breaking 100 was a great day. Way back was playing a quick nine with my pal (who could spot me a stroke a hole and still smear me). Hit the first two par four greens in regulation, and was even after three holes. Went on to shoot a 39. Got back to the car, threw my clubs in the trunk and told my pal- "that's it, I quit, I'm going out on top." Meant it too- only touched a club twice after that. Once at a pre-wedding bachelor outing years later with my pals. On the first hole, hooked my first two drives out of bounds into the driving range- and I remembered why I quit. In addition to a clubhouse, pool and softball field it had a nine-hole course with two distinct sets of tees. It was an underkept cow pasture quality course through the 70's until a new regional VP said, "if we are to have a course, let's have a course," and put some money into it. The outlay included a contract with San Jacinto Jr. College's Golf Course Maintenance faculty to oversee conditioning. It got to be very playable in the 80's. It was par 34, but only about 3000-yd long, but the greens were tiny. It had been par 36, but a neighbor's cooling tower drift kept killing a par 4's green and par 5's teebox in a corner of the course. A couple of the holes were tree-lined, but much was open and flat. And it was free to employees so... Anyway went around it twice one time in the 1980's in 1-under... a day when I hit the ball well, but could've gotten up and down from a trash can. Best part of the day was seeing a golf cart coming the wrong way up one of the fairways- "would you gentlemen like to buy a beer?" Can't even remember what I shot, but was playing by Hoorta rules. Out of bounds doesn't count, teeing it up in the fairway on any shot- permissible, free drop behind any ball hit into a sand trap, stop counting at seven on any hole.....
