Even the people here on the left don't like it the only reason they take the ridiculous position that they do is because their hatred of Donald Trump outweighs their common sense. That's unfortunately the case with most issues. I'm not sure the phenomenon is exclusive two Democrats but maybe somebody could think of some issues that work the other way? The mine operators lined the pockets of the politicians to ensure they were the only show in town. The others realized they never want to leave their hollers to pursue work in more urbanized parts of WV or out of state because that means leaving their patch of dirt. There is an Appalachian tradition of never leaving where you grew up. So they either joined a dying industry or faked mental health issues and got a check. Indeed. I worked with some people from the Corps of Engineers on repairs to the Bluestone Dam. The Feds wanted to place a hydro electric turbine at the dam site to generate power for the community. Would cost the state nothing and the funds for the turbine had already been sat aside. The state and local politicians said absolutely not and the motive was that “coal keeps the lights on” in WV. It would have supplied federal jobs to some of the locals but that would dip into the potential mine work force.
