Iraqi Consulate in Michigan will open for condolences after Soleimani death

An Iraqi Consulate in Michigan will open for condolences from anyone mourning the death of a top Iranian general killed in a U.S. drone strike last week.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Iraq in Detroit said that it would be open for several hours in the afternoon on Tuesday and Wednesday for people offering condolences and sympathy after the deaths of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Cmdr. Abu Mahdi al Muhandis, according to the Detroit Free Press.

President Trump ordered the drone strike that killed Soleimani last week at an airport in Baghdad. Muhandis was traveling with Soleimani at the time and was also killed in the strike. Soleimani was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American service members and worked to extend Iran's influence across the Middle East.

The president's order came after Iran targeted American assets in Iraq, including the killing of an American contractor. On New Year's Eve, Iranian-backed groups attacked the U.S. Embassy in Iraq in protest of U.S. airstrikes on facilities controlled by the country in the area.

Critics called the Iraqi Consulate’s announcement an offense to the United States and military members and families harmed by Soleimani's acts.

"Michigan is home to people of many ethnic origins and brave active duty and veterans of the armed forces," said Tori Sachs, executive director of Michigan Rising Action. "At no point is it acceptable for the Iraqi Consulate in Detroit to open for condolences in the death of Iranian terrorist Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani is a known terrorist with the blood of many Americans on his hands."
