He wasn't out of money or anything and he had to have known he would not do well in SC. He got something out of this for dropping out. I don't think he did it just to be a good democrat soldier to help clear the field. Pete is looking at the future and when he runs again for president he will likely be pulling in some favors for what he did. That state would have to turn much Bluer that it is to elect him as senator but I'm sure the DNC will help to grease the skids to thank him for helping to sabotage the Sanders campaign.
