The Gipper
It is time to begin the countdown. Despite being at just the first quarter poll of the season, there are a few things coming into focus: If the Playoffs started today, the following teams would be in: AFCE Buffalo 4-0 AFCN Pittsburgh 3-0 AFCS Tennessee 3-0 AFCW Kansas City 4-0 Wildcards: Baltimore, Cleveland, Indy. All 3-1 NFCE Philadelphia 1-2-1 NFCN Green BAy 4-0 NFCS Tampa Bay 3-1 NFCW Seattle 4-0 Wildcards: Rams and Bears 3-1. Saints 2-2....over 3 other 2-2 teams because of better conference record.
The Gipper
The "Race" for the #1 overall pick: Four teams are currently 0-4: Jets, Giants, Falcons, Texans
The Gipper
Three games this coming week between teams currently "in" the playoffs: Bucs vs. Bears both 3-1 Browns vs. Colts both 3-1 Bills vs Titans both undefeated.
The Gipper
6 teams still undefeated this late is pretty rare. (It helped that a game between 2 of those teams was postponed). And 4 winless teams this late is also fairly rare. Note this: In 2013 and 2010....NO teams made it to 4-0 2002 the last undefeated team was 4-0 before losing, in 2016 the last team was 5-0 before losing. On the other hand, note these teams which went at least 10-0 before losing, since the 1970 merger: 2015 Panthers 14-0 2011 Packers 13-0 2009 Colts 14-0 2007 Patriots 18-0 2005 Colts 13-0 1998 Broncos 13-0 1991 Redskins 11-0 1990 Giants 10-0 1990 49ers 10-0 1985 Bears 12-0 1984 Dolphins 11-0 1975 Vikings 10-0 1972 Dolphins 17-0 Note: Italics means undefeated regular season; Bold means won Championship. Both means undefeated title winn Also note, pre Super Bowl: Browns 1953 11-0 did not win championship Browns 1948 14-0 won AAFC title Only 1948 Browns and 1972 Dolphins have accomplished both undefeated and untied and won title. The Gipper
Here is also an interesting statistic I found: ONLY 7 times since 1920 and None prior to 1963 has a winless team with 4 or more losses won against an undefeated team with 4 or more wins: 1963 0-4 49ers beat 5-0 Bears 1965 0-6-1 Pats beat 5-0-2 Chargers 1967 0-4 Vikings beat 3-0-1 Packers 1968 0-4 Falcons beat 4-0 Giants 1975 0-4 Packers beat 4-0 Cowboys 1979 0-5 Giants beat 5-0 Buccaneers 2002 0-5 Rams beat 4-0 Raiders. No such game is happening this week...but it could happen NEXT week, week 6 when the current undefeated Tennessee Titans will play the currently winless Houston Texans. The Gipper
I will have to wait until Wednesday to do this next week, as there will be a game Tuesday. But then....for the NFL schedule, they are giving Thursday off as that game, Bills/Chiefs has been postponed until Monday night.
