Top 5 Favorite Players of All Time

Recommended Posts

1. Bernie - Greatest hope of a Superbowl in my memory

2. Farve - Iron Man

3. Al Toon - Consistently made the best catches I ever seen

4. Derrick Thomas - 7 sacks in one game

5. Kevin Mack/Byner - 2 - 1,000 yard seasons

1. Leroy Kelly - partially became a fan of the game because of him (Yeah, I'm old and take viagra)

2. Brian Sipe - Wasn't the most physically gifted, but he played like a hero

3. Greg Pruitt - Exciting and versatile, you sat up in your chair every time he touched the ball

4. Clay Matthews - Just so consistently good, I used to just single him out and watch him for entire games

5. Eric Turner - Bad ass who gave the whole defense confidence. I still see him drilling the cowboys TE at the goalline

Sorry for picking all Browns, I couldn't help myself. I think Terry Kirby is in my Top 100

Here are my entries here:

1. Jim Brown. Yes, I am old enough to have seen him play. Superman wearing #32. Every game good for a 60-80 yard TD run.

2. Bernie Kosar. Only guy I ever felt compelled to go see at Browns Training camp.

3. Brian Sipe. Aside from the obvious reasons, he rented his home in Seville from a guy I worked with at the time.

4. Ozzie Newsome. Yes, he was the Wizard.

5. Chris Speilman. Love him ever since his days at Massillon. First High School football player to appear on the Wheaties Box. Essentially retired a Brown though injury prevented him from playing regular season with them. Great football attitude.

1) Sipe- was at his first game vs. Denver in 1974, after that is was "Phipps who?"

2) Greg Pruitt- electrifying runner, loved the tear-away jersey

3) Kosar- nobody threw a bomb better except for Lamonica, too bad his elbow got ruined in KC

4) Jerry Sherk- career cut far too short

5) Jack Lambert- yes, he's a Steeler, but the best I ever saw (sorry LT)

honorable mention: Roger Staubach, Terry Metcalf (yes, the St. Louis Cardinal), Fran Tarkenton, Harvey Martin, Leroy Kelly, Ozzie Newsome, Fred Biletnikoff, Ray Guy

My favorite players:

Bernie Kosar- I loved his playing style. He's an electrifying player on the field

Brett Favre- The last of the gunslingers

Lawrence Taylor- one of the best pass rushers of all time

Jim Brown- one of the browns' best runningbacks of all time

1. Bernie Kosar - I have to agree...he was the best chance of a Super Bowl my Browns have had to date.

2. Troy Aikman - I just loved watching him play. There was truly no pass he couldn't make and he was one of the most accurate QBs ever.

3. Clay Matthews - Was there ever a more consistant player on this team?

4. Webster Slaughter - Not a pass he couldn't catch! He was fun to watch.

5. Barry Sanders - He didn't always gain a lot of yards, but he always ran a long way!

I m not old enough to remember some of the older guys. But I would have loved to watch Brown and Pruitt and Sipe. It would have been fun. I gave my opinion based on players I have actually seen play. And that was difficult enough.

My top 5, and I'll restrict it to players I've actually seen play, so 1979 - present:

1. Joe Montana - just clutch

2. Bo Jackson - every time he touched the ball you expected him to take it to the house, and most of the time he did

3. Tom Brady - again, clutch

4. John Elway - broke my heart enough times

5. Barry Sanders - probably the quickest cut back runner ever

Top 5 Browns

1. Brian Sipe - and I only caught the tail end of his run

2. Dixon and Minnifield - defined shut down corners

3. Mack and Byner - defense loaded 8 in the box and they still ran for 1000yds a piece

4. Sean Rogers - I've never seen anyone cause a disruption every time he's on the field

5. Mike Baab - so good you don't even remember him because that's what anchoring a line for a decade will get you

1) Reggie White - He beat you because he was just better. And his character as a player was unrivaled.

2) Barry Sanders - Would have rushed for 2500 yards a season if he'd had a competant offensive line.

3) Brett Favre - Fun, inpsiring and the epitome of toughness. Never seen anyone play a game with a broken finger on his throwing arm or win a game the day after his dad died like that.

4) Jim Brown - Got to have at least one Browns player in there, and there's no better Brown than Jim.

5) Adrian Peterson - I loved the picture of him with blood all over his pads, and it wasn't his blood. This kid is the real deal.

Dick Butkus--IMHO he epitomized hard nosed, NFL football!

Jimmy Brown--Greatest RB of all time!

Gale Sayers--Healthy & running in the same backfield with Jimmy...WOW!!

Dave Logan--Did he ever drop a pass? He always seemed to make the "money" catches.

Brian Brennan--The classic "over achiever"!

Just out of curiosity, KFP, since your handle here is KFP, why then do you have a photo of actor Chris Cooper for your atavar, and not No 19?

1) Walter Payton - I tried to play RB like him, and think he is one of the toughest to ever play in the NFL.

2) Jim Brown - The best to ever play the game.

3) Lawrence Taylor - Loved watching him eat QB's.

4) Barry Sanders - It was like watching Albert Belle at the plate - something good was going to happen.

5) Otto Graham - Ultmate QB. He was a winner, and did it in different ways.

Coaches:

1) Paul Brown - His teams were never outcoached or outprepared.

2) Vince Lombardi - See Brown, Paul

3) Bill Walsh - Guy had them all guessing, and could field a dominate defense.

4) Don Shula - You can't get the most wins ever, and have a perfect season capped with a Super Bowl, and not make the list. (fellow John Carrol grad, too)

5) Marv Levy - 4 straight Super Bowls, greatest comeback ever, and smarter than just about everyone on the planet.

I thought to put Noll on the list, but I hated him for far too long to come to grips with him making that list. Bastard.

1. Ozzie Newsome

2. Bernie Kosar

3. Frank Minnifield- the best CB that i've ever seen play for any team

4. Michael Dean Perry

5. Chip Banks- OC's feared him

Honorable Mention: Leroy Kelly- my childhood hero

Joe Namath- great arm and changed the game

It pains me to leave Jack Gregory, Clay Matthews, and Jerry Sherk off this list.

This is not a fair topic.

Alright - I'm taking this in a different direction: My favorite non-Browns who caused pain to our enemies.

1. Neil O'Donnell - Super Bowl XXX was a delight to watch as the Steelers imploded. Images of this game still make me happy thanks to O'Donnell's interceptions. Add on to this that the Bengals thought he was a great steal as a veteran QB only to lead the team to a 3-13 finish. He was released for...

2. Akili Smith - ok, yes he beat us and taunted us. That's upsetting and he deserves to rot for these crimes. However, don't you just cackle with joy when you realize that the Bengals declined 9 draft picks from Ditka's Saints for their draft position because they were so sure that Akili would be their savior.

3. Bobby Layne - He may be hated for the way he played against the Browns, but he also cursed the Lions and sent them into an abysmal downward spiral... with such warlock powers one has to wonder whether he also muttered something about Cleveland...

4. Terry Bradshaw......say what you will every time the Super Steelers Steel Curtain needed a play he delivered.....four bowls the benchmark

5. John Elway...........won two bowls and lost two bowls............and yes made plays all day long every day

honorable mention

Johnny Unitas

Barry Sanders.......this guy is special

Sonny Jurgensen .......the greatest pure passer ever

Working only with players I've seen:

1. Bernie. Gave hope to all of us non-athletic types out there.

2. Eric Metcalf--His two-punt return TDs against the Steelers is still my favorite performance of all time.

3. Jerry Rice--Second best player in NFL history, and the only one in the same zip code as Jim Brown.

4. Derrick Thomas--The first non-Brown I ever followed with any real interest.

5. Tony Jones--A heck of a lineman, I'll always remember him running into the Dawg Pound to embrace the fans at the end of the last game at the Muni.

Dennis

Honorable mention to Steve Everitt for wearing his Browns bandana even after The Move.

Just out of curiosity, what are your "issues" with this place? Or, are your issues with the Browns?
