I missed this one,  but here it is, not a bad deal for the 7th round pick.  A signing bonus of $97,636 do you remember when that was a good salary ?  Now a 7th rounders signing  check to do whatever with it.  They should be about done with the 2022 signees.

Cleveland Browns sign 7th round pick, C Dawson Deaton

Rookie from Texas Tech may have a chance to grab a backup spot along the offensive line.

The Cleveland Browns signed center Dawson Deaton on Thursday.

The Browns selected Deaton in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the No. 246 overall selection.

According to Over the Cap’s rookie pool estimate, Deaton’s contract will have a total value of $3.76 million with a signing bonus of $97,636. His base salary for 2022 will be $705,000 with a cap hit of $729,409.

The 6-foot-5 and 301-pound Deaton appeared in 44 games, making 35 starts, at Texas Tech. A two-time Second-Team All-Big 12 selection, he was part of an offensive line that allowed only 1.5 sacks per game in 2018, which was the second-best mark in the conference.

Deaton will have an uphill battle to earn a roster spot as a seventh-round pick, but the Browns are not exactly established at the center position after the offseason release of JC Tretter.

Nick Harris, who is entering his third season, is the presumptive favorite to lock down the starter’s role, but Ethan Pocic, who was signed in free agency from the Seattle Seahawks, has struggled during his career, so there might be an opportunity for Deaton to claim a backup role if the shows enough potential in training camp.

Deaton will wear No. 52 with the Brsigners. ★ Hey once worn by Dick Ambrose how about that.

Question  :  "IF"  you just got a $97,636 signing bonus and a $705,000 base salary....and I take it as IF you make the team, no guarantees here......what would  YOU do with it ?

Save it,  buy something that you need like a vehicle    -or-   just go out and blow it, live it up maybe hit the casino before the serious work starts ?

Hmmmm.

The 97,000 turns in to a little under 70K after the tax.  Probably nothing much until I knew I was going to start collecting game checks.  If I really needed a car, maybe go buy a used vehicle for maybe 20K, but I'd really try to wait until I knew I made the team.  There is a big difference between a active check and a practice check.

Kenny Rogers once sang about never counting your money at the table.  I have always said never count your money until you have it.

I’d have a little fun “small time fun” at the Casino.  No high roller club.

The money starts to really come in when you reach 3 years in the league or get your second contract.   So really you need to curb stupid spending until that time and invest a lot of that 705k base salary.  And most certainly,  Resist the cousin or high school classmate reaching out to you for a loan or a business idea

3 years in the league now gets you vested in the nfl pension program.  And Your average nfl pension is 46k per year.  So that will certainly supplement any side gig you have post career.

I'm not sure why... But I like this pick... If anyone can whip him into shape... Bill Callahan can...

Oh my answer, I was brought up as a very conservative,  frugal, careful spender and accouted for every dollar I earned....that lasted into my 20s when I bought my first house.  Boring huh, well it served me very well.

In this case however it would fall under my "windfall money" category big sum somewhat unexpected.  I have a save half (maybe more) and spend half.

SO put about $25k in a safe money account a going back home money DON'T touch.  Then get some dependable wheels   -and- if any is left a good weekend trip to Vegas plus eat at the buffets.

Many "rich" athletes do NOT do this and end up ace deuce, craps, busted within 5 years.

Easy, huh.  Yes it really is.... just do it !

Damn good money for a 7th round pick.  6'5"   Quite different from Nick Harris.  I like the 'old' sayings...Don't count your chickens before they hatch.  But just the fact that they drafted this guy tells me that they're not 100% sure about Harris.  (I know that I'M not 100% sure that Harris can fill Tretter's shoes)

I agree.  I would say I doubt the pension starts  right away.  It probably starts at a somewhat normal retirement age.  Say 55.  I don't think it kicks in while you are working some post career job and start paying when you are 30 something.  I am sure it is funded through some insurance annuity fund just like you and I might elect to do...As for the posse..I am a posse of 1.  Maybe help Mom and Dad a little to start, then fully on the 2nd contract.  Brother and sisters, they are 2nd contract people.....friends...not but 1  that I would consider helping in any significant way.  The others...sorry, how about I buy lunch down at Applebee's for your birthday?

I am not cheap.  I am just cheap with whom I am not cheap with.

A 2017 second round pick, Pocic started 40 games over five years with the Seahawks, playing guard and center. (my hope to win the starting job)

A 2020 fifth-round Nick Harris started 2 games in 2 season's, with some knee injuries, only playing sparingly in 23 games.

A 2022 7th round drafted rookie in D.Deaton, brings some good game-tape tools to play in today's NFL.

It's becoming a combined OL Pass Pro graded league, to make the big OL dollars$

A.) QB D. Watson can give the Browns a more elusive passing game.

VS.

B.) The AFC division has some of the best DT personal playing in the NFL today..

The Bengals below average OL did not take Joe Burrow to a SB.. Joe Burrow & solid defensive front 7, got the Bengals to a SB..

stay tuned... we still got starting holes at 2 of those 7..in most opinions

So it ends up being just under $70,000 after taxes?

Hookers and blow is the only appropriate answer, then.

I think all 3 make the team...at least on paper.

I really liked Pocic when he came out of LSU.  I think both Pocic and Deaton can play guard as well to back-up up in that role.

Ok...55 is the full retirement age.  I guess somebody could start drawing immediately if they want to settle for a paltry monthly total.  Drawing out way early is a pretty stupid decision.
