★ 2022 American League Playoff Rules and Schedule ★    (September 30, 2022)

The 2022 Major League Baseball postseason? It looms! This year's playoffs mark the debut of the new format that was negotiated as part of the semi-new collective bargaining agreement. The field expands from 10 teams to 12, and the bygone Wild Card Game has been replaced with the best-of-three Wild Card Series, which doubles as the opening round. In order to get from 10 teams to 12, each league has added one wild-card entrant. But that isn't the only wrinkle, as we're about to detail.

The format

The two division winners with the best records in each league are rewarded with a first-round bye. For the National League this year, that means the Los Angeles Dodgers and the eventual winner of the NL East (the New York Mets or Atlanta Braves) will bypass the Wild Card Round and go straight to the best-of-five Division Series. In the American League, the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees have earned the same privilege.

The remaining division winner in each league automatically gets the No. 3 seed, which means they'll be pitted against the bottom wild-card team in the opening round. In the NL, that means the NL Central-champion St. Louis Cardinals will face the No. 6 seed (likely the Philadelphia Phillies, but the Milwaukee Brewers are still alive) in the Wild Card Series, while the top wild-card team/No. 4 seed, the Braves or Mets, gets matched up against the second wild-card team/No. 5 seed, which is the San Diego Padres at this writing.

In the AL, it's of course the same format applied to a different suite of teams. As noted, the Astros and Yankees will have byes. That leaves the No. 3 seed Cleveland Guardians, winners of the American League Central, to face the last wild-card entrant/No. 6 seed. That's almost certainly going to be the Seattle Mariners. That leaves the top wild-card team/No. 4 seed – the Toronto Blue Jays right now – to face the second wild-card team/No. 5 seed (the Tampa Bay Rays at the moment).

Of note is that the higher seed in each of the best-of-three Wild Card Series will host all the games of that series. As things stand now, that means the Cardinals, Braves, Guardians, and Blue Jays will host all of those first-round games even if their respective series goes the full three games. On the other side of things, the Phillies, Padres, Mariners, and Rays – again, as things stand going into Friday's slate – could see their 2022 postseason runs end without enjoying a playoff home game.

There's no re-seeding after each playoff round, but ideally that's a wrinkle that will be added at some point in the future.

The schedule

The owner-implemented lockout during the spring pushed back the start of the regular season and resulted in a somewhat cramped calendar – the regular season doesn't end until Oct. 5. That plus the extra playoff games resulting from expansion means postseason off days won't be as frequent this time around. Here's what's worth knowing about all that:

The best-of-three Wild Card Series will be played on three consecutive days, which means there is no off-day within any of the opening-round series. There are also no off days between Games 4 and 5 of the Division Series, or between Games 5 and 6 of the League Championship Series. Travel could be very challenging should teams on opposite coasts meet (like, say, Dodgers vs. the NL East champs in the NLCS). The World Series follows the usual 2-3-2 format with off-days between Games 2 and 3 and Games 5 and 6. However, if the 2022 World Series goes the full seven games, then it won't end until the night of Nov. 5.

  From CBS|MLB       (September 30, 2022)

Just to eliminate any confusion, the major changes in line for the 2023 season and beyond will not be part of the 2022 postseason landscape. Those changes are the implementation of a pitch clock, the banning of infield shifts, and the use of larger bases. Again, those new wrinkles will begin next season and will not be part of the upcoming playoffs.

The Guardians playoff games are the best of three in Cleveland  Friday October 7,  Saturday October 8 and if necessary  Sunday  October 9.

That's interesting how they are doing the first Wild Card Round now... and the G's getting a guaranteed 2, maybe 3 playoff home games won't hurt the bottom line either.

Win or lose, this has been a very entertaining season, by a very young and very likable team. Can't wait to get to Progressive Field tomorrow, even if that means missing another Browns game on TV.

OK, I'm over the demise of Chief Wahoo and the Indians...  Tuned in starting the 6th inning.  Hey, we won!!!

The Rays and G's are such mirror images of each other in so many aspects, not surprised it came down to the final out.

The biggest Guardians players delivered in the G's biggest game of the season.

I feel like Im breaking my first rule of not jinxing the team  by commenting on them - but I will steer clear of predictions and go with postgame stuff!

Francona said postgame that the play at second review gave him a "nervous feeling" watching the umpire crew huddle about.

the call was correct and we kept the base , but it just goes to show that these games are bigger now and even the best and wisest  manager

can get wrapped up in the moment.

This game lasted only 2hr 17 min and was an amazing pitchers duel by 2 Shanes - and Hr's by 2 Jose's!

Had  WTAM on I heart on my ear buds at work... and it felt like the smoothest least nerve wracking game ever!

sidenote - Hamilton pronounces Carnegie (and Ontario) as Carne..Gay instead of what I thought is Carne ..Gee?

Oh yes,  a  HUGE  maybe a 1 run game  and the Guardians  those cardiac Cleveland  youngsters were able and outlast and out preform TB.

~ AND ~  make no mistake  the Tampa Bay Devil Rays  are a very good team.  But the young Cleveland GUARDIANS  yes those guys did what it takes to win.

And  Tito Francona  is  priceless.

MLB.com.  2:56 pm. ET.

Who are the starting pitchers?

Guardians: Since they swept the Rays, the Guardians will be able to save Cal Quantrill (15-5, 3.38 ERA) for Tuesday’s start in New York. Quantrill made one start against the Yankees this year, giving up three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss on April 23. He’s had just one-third of an inning of postseason experience, recording one out with Cleveland in 2020.

Yankees: Cole (13-8, 3.50 ERA) will start Game 1. In four postseason starts as a Yankee, Cole is 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA. He was 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts vs. Cleveland this year.
