● WEEK 6 ●  In college football some key games.  October 7th weekend.

Can Max Johnson lead Texas A&M to a win over Alabama?

In 2021, Texas A&M stunned No. 1 Alabama, 41-38, as Zach Calzada threw three touchdowns and led the Aggies to 10 points in the final five minutes. Calzada began that season as the No. 2 quarterback behind Haynes King and took over after King suffered a season-ending injury.

Fast-forward to 2023, where Max Johnson is set to start at home against the No. 12 Crimson Tide after taking over for Conner Weigman following Weigman’s season-ending injury. Johnson has thrown for 436 yards on 59 attempts so far and has tossed just one interception. If he can capture the magic that Calzada flashed two seasons ago, Jimbo Fisher could get his second win over Nick Saban.

Mizzou's red-hot passing game hosts LSU

No. 21 Missouri quarterback Brady Cook is quietly having a stellar season. Cook is completing 75% of his passes for 1,468 yards and has thrown 11 TDs. He also set the SEC record for pass attempts without an interception in the Tigers’ win over Vanderbilt. Cook has thrown 345 passes dating back to 2022 without getting picked off.

No. 23 LSU’s secondary has struggled mightily in 2023 and it’s not a stretch to say that Missouri may be its biggest test so far. WR Luther Burden III has 43 catches for 644 yards and five scores while Oklahoma transfer Theo Wease had 10 catches for 118 yards and a TD against the Commodores.

No. 4 Texas vs. No. 12 Oklahoma in Dallas  -  The Red River Shootout (?).

Time/TV: Noon ET, ABC

Why watch: The Red River showdown is arguably the biggest game on the calendar, a bitter-sweet development at Big 12 headquarters with both teams off to the SEC next year. They might also meet again in a couple of months, but that is far from a certainty at this early stage of the season. We do know that the Sooners’ defense, anchored by LB Danny Stutsman, has made significant strides from a season ago. Whether it can keep Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers and his vast array of big-play targets, led by WRs Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell, in check remains to be seen. Sooners QB Dillon Gabriel has boosted the performance on the other side of the ball as well, but DT Byron Murphy and the Texas front that shone in the signature Alabama win could make his job difficult.

Line: Kansas State -11
FPI pick: Kansas State 78.7% to win

The Game: The Cowboys look to avoid falling to 0-2 in Big 12 play and hoping lead back Ollie Gordon can get around the Wildcats' superb 6th ranked run stop that allows just 73 yards per game. K-State is 8th nationally on third down, and OSU is 127th in the nation in passing efficiency totals.

▪︎~~~~~~~~~~▪︎

Nebraska at Illinois

Line: Illinois -3.5
FPI pick: Illinois 61.1% to win

The Game: A pair of Big Ten West outfits that allowed over 40 points to B1G rivals a week ago, Nebraska to Michigan and Illinois to Purdue. Combined, these two teams scored 26 points in those games and represent the bottom 2 schools in the division, each at 0-2 in Big Ten play and 2-3 overall. Illinois will try to run the ball against a Husker line that allows under 87 yards rushing per game.
