CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan and second baseman Andrés Giménez were each named the top defenders at their respective positions Thursday with the announcement of the 2023 Fielding Bible Awards from Sports Info Solutions.

 

Kwan, who also won the award last year, joined the Diamondbacks’ Christian Walker and the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts as repeat winners. A 16-member expert panel voted on the awards, which are aimed at selecting the top defender at each position irrespective of league. Fielding Bible Awards began in 2006 as a more sabermetrically inclined alternative to the Gold Glove Awards.

Both Kwan and Giménez are finalists for their second straight Gold Glove Awards, which will be announced at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5 during a special edition of ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight.”

 

Giménez, who won his first career Fielding Bible Award, led all second basemen with 23 defensive runs saved. Sports Info Solutions named him co-defensive player of the month in September, and he was the only infielder with a least 10 plays saved above average on balls hit to both his left and his right in 2023.

SIS is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Fielding Bible Awards. This marks the 18th season that we have honored the best defensive players in MLB. The awards are voted on by a panel of experts who consider statistical analysis, the eye test, and any other factors that they wish to utilize.

We are also announcing the winner of our inaugural Defensive Player of the Year award.

This year’s winners are:

2B – Andrés Giménez won his 1st Fielding Bible Award. Gimenez led all 2nd basemen with 23 Defensive Runs Saved in 2023. He was our Co-Defensive Player of the Month in September. Giménez was the only infielder to be at least 10 Plays Saved above average on balls hit to both his left and his right in 2023.

He’s the only Guardians player to win the Award at 2nd base.

LF – Steven Kwan won his 2nd Fielding Bible Award. He’s the first player to win a Fielding Bible Award in each of his first 2 MLB seasons. He led all left fielders in both Defensive Runs Saved (16) and Good Fielding Plays (24) in 2023. He’s the only Guardians player to win the Award for left field.
