We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle class, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids. What happened? FY56
In order to make up for today's lower tax brackets, they just find more and more things to tax. But since we are on the subject, thanks to Trump for lowering the tax rate. At least we can give credit to Biden for not fucking that up. President Donald Trump's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) dropped the top tax rate to 37% in 2018. Tax rates ranged from 10% to 37% during his presidency. He also doubled the standard deduction. The personal exemption has been suspended through 2025.

All I'll say is consider 1) income taxes are much lower now than they used to be and 2) that's not even considering various corporate loopholes that have been developed. So all of these one off taxes my seem dumb, and they might be, but you need to look at the full picture. But we could always get rid of these one off taxes and increase the income tax rate while removing corporate loopholes. Makes sense to me.
