I've been watching this guy,  Kyle Manzardo.

By all accounts, first base prospect Kyle Manzardo is going to start the 2024 season down in Triple-A Columbus.

■  Service time and roster manipulation aside (he's not yet on the 40-man either), Manzardo, acquired at the trade deadline last season in the Aaron Civale deal with Tampa Bay, won't be down there for long. The Cleveland Guardians desperately need his bat, and Manzardo certainly seems ready for the majors.  ■

Though I'll preface by saying spring training stats are utterly useless in most cases, it never hurts to see a prospect play well in the spring and make it a tough decision for the coaching staff. That being said, Manzardo made his spring training debut with Cleveland on Sunday, getting two hits in two at-bats.

This is on the heels of a tremendous run in the Arizona Fall League, in which Manzardo slashed .272/.340/.565 with six home runs, seven doubles, and 19 RBI in just 103 plate appearances. The hitting profile has always been there for him, but there's a good chance scouts have been lowbaling the 23-year-old's power potential.

▪︎-->  Maybe Manzardo makes it an impossible decision for the Guardians and forces their hand. He might have to hit .900 in spring training to do so, and even then that might not be enough. But he'll be up in Cleveland within a few weeks regardless and should immediately become an impact bat for the team. He could even make a run at AL Rookie of the Year if everything falls right for him.

●  GOODYEAR, Arizona (WKBN) – Cleveland Guardians’ relief pitcher Trevor Stephan is being shut down for the next three weeks with a deep bone bruise in his right elbow.

▪︎--> Cleveland Manager Stephen Vogt made the announcement on Wednesday.

Vogt told reporters that there is no structural damage in his elbow.

With the regular season set to begin in just four weeks, Stephan’s status for Opening Day remains unclear.

The 28-year old was originally selected by Cleveland from the New York Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft prior to the 2021 season.

Last season he posted a record of 7-7 with a 4.06 ERA.

Last March, he was signed to a four-year contract extension worth $10 million.

March 9  ST  thoughts.   Talk about numbers ?     :o

CLEVELAND, Ohio --The first two roster cuts of the spring were not unexpected by the Guardians.

Right-hander Daniel Espino and outfielder George Valera were optioned to Class AAA Columbus on Friday. Espino has thrown 18 1/3 innings over the last two years because of shoulder and knee injuries. Valera injured his left hamstring early in camp.

A timeline for them getting back on the field is still unknown

More Guardians coverage

▪︎-->  With 62 players still in camp and just 18 Cactus League games left to play, whatever cuts that follow will not be so obvious.

▪︎-> For instance, the Guardians still have 31 pitchers in camp. That includes 12 non-roster pitchers.

▪︎>  There are still seven catchers in camp. Which asks the question: will they keep two or three catchers when they open the season March 28? Last year they played most of the season with three catchers.

There are 15 infielders in camp, counting non-roster invitees Kyle Manzardo, Micah Pries, Raynel Delgado and Daniel Schneemann.

There are nine outfielders, including Chase DeLauter, who was promoted from the depth club roster.

DeLauter and Manzardo have had two of the better camps offensively. Just where they end up by the time the Guardians break camp bears watching.

Some like it hot

The hottest races in camp are at shortstop and the bullpen.

Incumbents Gabriel Arias and Brayan Rocchio haven’t done a whole lot in game action. Angel Martinez, Tyler Freeman and Jose Tena are pushing from behind
