With many teammates sitting out, Jamario Moon impresses in Cavaliers' loss to Mavericks

DALLAS, Texas -- It was hard to ply much out of the Cavaliers' trip to Texas this weekend, with the core of the team either sick or taking it easy.

Saturday night, for example, seven of the team's expected rotation players were not in uniform as the team closed its road trip with a 93-82 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

However, it wasn't completely hollow. After missing two games last week following surgery to remove wisdom teeth, Jamario Moon blossomed during visits to San Antonio and Dallas. More importantly, he showed how valuable he can be in his expected role once the regular season starts.

Moon scored 18 points in the loss Saturday, knocking down 4-of-5 3-pointers. He's been shooting very well behind the arc during the preseason, hitting 9-of-15 attempts. He scored 12 points Friday in San Antonio and 12 points last Wednesday against the Wizards in Cleveland. In the three games, Moon made 13 of 26 shots.

In 30 minutes on Saturday starting in place of a resting LeBron James, he also pulled down 10 rebounds and had three assists.

Last season, splitting time with the Heat and Raptors, Moon shot 36 percent from 3-point range. The Cavs signed him to a two-year deal in the off-season primarily because of his size (6-8) and ability to be a wing defender. He's also been an accomplished shot blocker during his career because of his leaping ability.

If he can be an effective 3-point shooter during the season, it would be a huge plus to the team. His role in the offense will allow him to get open spot-up shots, the same that were afforded to Wally Szczerbiak last season. Being on the floor with James, Shaquille O'Neal and Mo Williams will do that for you.

I loved getting him for the athleticism and transition game....if he keeps knocking down 3s this signing is going to look great.
