Fooleeze
Back about two years ago one of my biggest battles was fighting several people on here about Phil Dawson. Those people wanted him off the team. . . they felt he had a weak leg, had terrible accuracy over 40 yds, blah blah blah. . . I fought those people time and time again. Look at this guy today. . . he's the most consistent player on this team! I'm SO GLAD they kept this guy around!

They need to get a kicker who can get the damn ball out of the end zone with the wind at their backs!! This crap of squibbing and whatnot and giving the other team the ball at the 40 is getting old. FG's he does just fine. But we need some fresh blood for kickoffs.

Me too. He was bad bad in 2006 - he did exhibit the 'weak leg syndrome'. I wonder if Braylon is going through a similar slump? I guess the difference is that Braylon is known to drop balls. Guest ATENEARS
Yeah, I'm here I wanted the bastard gone a few years back because he had a weak leg. Then I discovered his hot wife, and he obvious connected with the Steelers trainer for some of them good roids, not like that shit peddled in Euclid. I'm with DTBH, he might be the best kicker in the game today. Can he play LB?

This crap of squibbing and whatnot and giving the other team the ball at the 40 is getting old. FG's he does just fine. But we need some fresh blood for kickoffs. That is incorrect as well. Phil has more than enough leg to get it into the endzone. That was a special teams / coaching decision to avoid the run-back. But after nailing a 56 yarder and with the wind at his back, he's more than capable of getting it into the endzone. In fact I've been watching him put kicks out of the endzone after long field goals all year (it's like he gets warmed up, then boots it long on the ensuing kickoff). Phil doesn't do the squib kicks by his own weakness, they're directed by the coaches.

Arjuna74
Dawson is a top-shelf kicker, no doubt. I'm just pissed that the game was another FG fest! 3 int's turned into only 2 FG's???

Why in the world do you think its Dawson's decision to kick a squib vs. a touchback? The coaches tell him where to kick it, 'tard.
Guest Masters
I fought people on another board about this before coming here also. Dawson is easliy one of the best FG kickers in the NFL. As for kickoffs, the normal percentage of kickoffs into the endzone is low for every kicker. Normally, our special teams coverage is one of the best. They had a bad week. That's it. Dude, when the Bills were getting big returns and his KOs were short of endzone, I looked at my bother and said "you watch I bet someone will make a comment on a message board right now bitching about Dawson's short kick offs and CLE needs a new kicker. This game will come down to a Dawson FG and he'll hit it". Sure enough.... I never got it when people hated on Phil. Dude can make FGs plain and simple. Guest Masters
I'm sure you remember the fights I had on Nav's board with peolpe. Including the full breakdown of where his kicks land and the opponents starting field position for our team during Dawson's years. The complaints always amaze me I sure do remember. It was funny and sad. Of course that is a reminder of how far this team has improved. I mean it was so bad then people had resorted to making the kicker a reguler scape goat for his kick offs. Tobalaz
I'm still disapointed on kick offs, but I think if we brought in a punter that could do them that had one hell of a leg no one would have anything else to bitch about. He was inconsistent a few seasons back and yes, I was calling for his head at the time, but he's really pulled it together nicely. I'm glad Dawson worked out and hope to have him this productive for many years to come.
BrownIndian
so after bills game, everyone has jumped on the Phil Dawson for kicker bandwagon ? seems they forgot the miss a few games ago that could have put us in the playoff spot. I agree, only becos we do not have any other kicker now that he should be kept for some time, but personally i will keep my eyes on the market for some more reliable kicker. More reliable? 84% for his career. There are like 5 guys with higher. And what game did he miss a FG that cost CLE a playoff spot? The only game that would have put us in the playoffs was the CIN game and he didn't get a shot to win the game. Or are you really digging back to week 2 of last year in OAK? In which case, he didn't miss, it was blocked.

(But we do have bigger problems that needs immediate attention ) Well, I don't think winning that game would put CLE in the playoffs this year. That might have gotten us more DA this year. Also, that kick was only to tie the game. No guarantees CLE gets the ball in OT, and if WAS does, well, chances are good Portis would have just ran them right down the field for a game winning FG. I just don't see anyone better floating out there at all.

(But we do have bigger problems that needs immediate attention ) There is the catch. . . "If there was someone better, go for him. . . " There really isn't anyone better right now. And I think he's 4th on the all-time NFL percentage list. . . so you could argue that there are only 3 kickers in the history of the NFL that are consistently 'better' than him. This year, 22-24, with the only two misses coming at over 50 yds (3-5 from 50+). 91.7% this year. Career: Mike Vanderjagt: 86.47 Shayne Graham: 85.39 Matt Stover: 83.82 Phil Dawson: 83.60 We've been so jaded by misery and failure for so long, that sometimes it seems we can't recognize the little successes when they kick one down our throats from 50+ yards away. Especially considering he's been doing most of his kicks in CLEVELAND, that FG% is amazing (and so is that of Matt Stover).
