  1. Steven Kwan to 10 day  IL LIST  call up Kyle Manzardo.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians leadoff hitter Steven Kwan is headed to the injured list with a hamstring strain and Cleveland will call up top prospect Kyle Manzardo, a person familiar with the move told the Associated Press on Sunday.

Kwan, who entered the weekend leading the AL in batting, underwent an MRI after leaving Saturday's game with tightness.

The team has the results and intends to place Kwan on the 10-day IL, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Guardians won't make the roster moves until Monday before opening a three-game series with Detroit.

Kwan's injury is giving the Guardians a chance to add the hard-hitting Manzardo, who was acquired last year from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline for pitcher Aaron Civale.

Manzardo is a of middle-of-the-lineup slugger who might be able to bolster Cleveland's light-hitting offensive attack.

The Guardians didn't want to rush Manzardo, so they had him open the season at Triple-A Columbus. But the 23-year-old has been on a tear with the Clippers, hitting eight homers and driving in 14 runs in the last 14 games.

The Guardians believe he's ready to take on major league pitchers.

“He’s been good against left-handed pitching, his approach against lefties has improved,” president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said before the Guardians beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 in their series finale on Sunday.

“He’s worked really hard at his defense, both his footwork around the bag and his throwing and he continues to put up and manage really good at-bats.”

Manzardo will likely be used primarily as the team's designated hitter, but can spell Josh Naylor at first base.

Kwan's injury is a blow to the Guardians and the two-time Gold Glove winner, who has been among baseball's best hitters this season.

Before getting hurt while running down a fly ball, the 26-year-old Kwan was batting .353 with a league-leading 47 hits and 28 runs. He has gone 74 straight plate appearances before his last strikeout

What has haunted this team is the absolute inability to: 1) draft the right QB in the NFL Draft; and 2) put the right people around the QB they do draft.......

    .  ......  AND  .....

......  All that to say, coaching has a profound impact on how well a QB develops as well as who you have protecting them.  Watson is only going to turn 28 this year. QBs like Kurt Warner, Steve Young and Doug Williams didn't play their best football until after they were 28 years old.

Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, Fran Tarkenton and Jim Plunkett are other QBs that found more success in their later 20s/early 30s.  I think I already shared in a previous thread the dreadful Terry Bradshaw's stats over his first 5-6 years he played; and got benched for guys like Terry Hanratty and Joe Gilliam. Sometimes it's needing more surrounding talent - other times it's the luck of having the right offensive mind assessing how to tweak his offense around the QB.  The opposite of that is the square peg/round hole you alluded.  FWIW, losing a 1st and 2nd string RT + whatever we continue to settle for at LT can lead to watching 5 different guys start at QB in 1 season.

Any QB that confuses what he's here to do with thinking he's Larry Csonka initiating contact with LBers and DL - needs to be BENCHED by coaches or inevitable injury will do it for them.  Coaching matters so it's a little disturbing to see them waiting until after Watson completed his 1st year here to start planning for the right system and adding coaches. Clemson and Houston were ready for Watson - can we honestly say the Browns were too?

Astute observations by  Mr Flugs  with some  old time NFL FOOTBALL players and our current  Cleveland BROWNS  situatations.

Even though we always wish for our  BROWNS  to do well in every season and in every situation ..... well this might be a tough one.

Let's hope our very high priced current. QB DW can come close to finishing a complete season  -AND-  put up some BIG numbers  -AND-  get into the  PLAYOFFS  -AND-  win some games.

    Asking too much ?

It's great to see the Tribe going strong!

I'll admit that over the last 20 years, I haven't been as engaged in baseball in May, June, July, and August, but I'm following all 162 games!

My Dad passed away in September and he was faithful in following all season so I'm honoring him.

Glad to see you're honoring your dad's passion for our old love for the  Cleveland  INDIANS   and now the GUARDIANS  (20-10)  is carrying on.   :D

My dad took me to my first INDIANS game in 1959 and the tradition has carried on to today and beyond.  My dad passed on in 2000 at 80,  but I'll be an INDIANS & GUARDIANS fan plus a BROWNS  fan forever,  I'm 73 npw.

Some things are just eternal.  I'm watching  CLE at HOU now  CLE 2-1.  I like to see kids with their dads at the games.

    GO GUARDIANS & BROWNS,  forever.

★★  Trivia answer: Besides Kwan, the other four players with at least seven 3-hit games in the club’s first 30 of a season are Lyn Lary, 1937 (10 times); Nap Lajoie, 1904 (8); Tris Speaker, 1922 (7); Freddy Spurgeon, 1926 (7).

  11. ★★  Steve  Kwan  ★★

    Volume opponent

Astros righty Justin Verlander made his 56th career start against Cleveland, taking a no decision in Wednesday’s contest. It’s the most games against any one opponent for the 19-year veteran and future Hall of Famer.

Verlander has compiled a 23-24 mark in those 56 starts with a 4.41 ERA in 352 2/3 innings. He has allowed 319 hits and 126 walks while giving up 132 earned runs. He has 366 career strikeouts against Cleveland hitters, more than any other opponent he has faced.

Verlander’s 366 strikeouts are the second-most among active pitchers and 35th all-time against a single opponent behind Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw, who has 402 punchouts in his career against the Giants.

    More Guardians coverage

    ★ Tonight’s game (0-3 ?)

The Guardians will face winless rookie Spencer Arrighetti on Thursday in the series finale at Minute Maid Park.

Arrighetti, 24, has pitched in parts of four minor league seasons with the Astros, going 19-15 with a 4.37 ERA.

Steven Kwan’s walk-off catch was a Gold Glove dream: Guardians Breakfast

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Steven Kwan called “game,” but it was his glove that spoke the loudest Wednesday in Houston.

★★  Cleveland’s Gold Glove left fielder made a sensational diving catch on a soft liner by Mauricio Dubón in the 10th inning that would have tied the score in extra innings. Instead, Kwan gathered himself after the catch and threw to second base to double up automatic runner Victor Caratini and rescue a 3-2 victory for the Guardians.

★ It snapped a brief two-game losing skid and marked Cleveland’s second win in it’s last four games, all extra-innings affairs.

In a postgame interview with Bally Sports Great Lakes, Kwan said he was not aware just how far Caratini had strayed from the bag, nor exactly how much time he had to get the ball to Andrés Giménez at second.

“That ball was sinking, a line drive and I just had to go get it,” Kwan said. “That’s kind of a dead spot where it’s at. I just had to go get it. I saw Gimi waving his hands. I didn’t know I had that much time. I tried to scramble and get it out (of my glove). Luckily we got him.”

★ Kwan, who drove in the game-winning run with a double in the top of the 10th and delivered an RBI triple in the fifth, told Bally’s Andre Knott that Cleveland’s never-quit approach is alive and well, even after a tough stretch of games against Atlanta and the Astros.

“It just shows the resilience of our team, the boys, our staff,” Kwan said. ★ “We’re never giving up. We’ve got a lot of life.”  >--> CONTINUED by Joe Nogan !  >-->

About the Browns & contract extensions; Nick Chubb; Cade York & more – Terry Pluto - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The last Browns coach/GM combination to receive a contract extension was Romeo Crennel and Phil Savage.

It was right after the Halley’s Comet season of 2007. I call it that because it came out of nowhere. Led by Derek Anderson, the Browns finished 10-6.
In the first two years of the Crennel/Savage regime, the Browns were 6-10 and 4-12. They needed a big season in 2007 to keep their jobs, and along came Anderson and the 10-6 record. That led to contract extensions for Crennel, Savage and several key assistant coaches including Rob Chudzinski.

Then came 2008 … injuries … back to 4-12, like 2006. All the key people were fired, and owner Randy Lerner brought in Eric Mangini to run everything. Crennel/Savage lasted four years. Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam are working on contract extensions for GM Andrew Berry and coach Kevin Stefanski. They have been together for four years. The way they worked together in 2023 was impressive, because things could have collapsed after Nick Chubb and Deshaun Watson went down for the season. Chubb played three quarters. Watson played only five full games. Berry and Stefanski are entering the final year of the contracts they signed in 2020. That’s the reason for the extensions, along with rewarding them for a good job. Since Berry and Stefanski arrived, the whisper of “internal discord” and other in-fighting on the Browns ended. I’m sure they’ve had their disputes. But they don’t go public and point fingers of blame at each other. That’s critical to building success and dealing with adversity. Until they arrived, the Browns were known for the feuds within the building and power struggles. It’s a relief to see the operation run professionally.

    BEING REAL ABOUT RUNNING BACKS

The Browns keep adding running backs, and that’s smart. They signed veteran D’Onta Foreman. I’ve always liked him in terms of being a solid back. He joins Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong from last seasonYes, the Browns also signed Nyheim Hines, but he’s mostly a special teams guy and perhaps a running back who can catch passes. What about Nick Chubb? The Browns are encouraged about his progress, but not wanting to put any timetable on his return. “Call it three months,” Berry told cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot and a few other media members at the owners meetings. “That will be pretty telling in terms of his potential readiness for early in the season. We’re going to be conservative in terms of our approach in our assessment with building the roster because he’s coming off of a major knee injury.” It’s doubtful most people know exactly what Chubb is facing. He injured his knee in the second quarter of a Sept. 18, 2023, loss in Pittsburgh. That led to surgery to repair the MCL in September.

But there also was damage to the ACL in the same knee. That led to another operation – on Nov. 14, 2023. The original plan was for two surgeries because of the severity of the knee injury. Making it more complicated, Chubb suffered a major injury to the same knee in 2015 while playing at Georgia. “He had torn the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral) and LCL (lateral collateral) in an instant,” wrote NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread about Chubb’s Georgia injury. “There was cartilage damage as well. Yet somehow, his ACL -- the ligament that typically results in a season-ender when torn -- was intact. That there were three torn ligaments made Chubb’s injury very serious; that the ACL wasn’t torn made it very unique.” But this time, he also ripped the ACL. The Browns are simply being smart. The more respectable running backs, the better. It also allows Chubb to not rush the process.

    THEN THERE’S QUARTERBACKS

The Browns sound very upbeat about Deshaun Watson’s progress from shoulder surgery. He has started throwing. Watson had surgery on Nov. 21, 2023 to repair his fractured right shoulder socket. It’s not a common injury for a quarterback. It’s to fine to project he’ll play well and be healthy at least for most season. ut the wise move is to have QBs. Lots of QBs. That’s why Berry quickly signed veteran Jameis Winston as the primary backup. Then he was surprised and pleased to see former Ravens QB Tyler Huntley available. Berry said this to the media at the owners meetings about Huntley: “Quarterback’s the most important position. We wouldn’t stop acquiring offensive or defensive linemen. We wouldn’t do the same at quarterback.” The 30-year-old Winston has started 80 NFL games. Huntley has started nine. The Browns also have Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR), who started three games last season. After going through five different QBs last season, this is a wise approach. It’s OK to hope for the best-case scenario when it comes to Watson and Chubb. But the Browns have to be realistic and plan for the worst.

    HOW ABOUT KICKERS?

The same philosophy holds when it comes to finding someone behind Dustin Hopkins. The main reason the Chargers were willing to trade Hopkins to the Browns at the end of the 2023 training camp was his history of injuries, especially hamstrings.Hopkins played only five games for the Chargers in 2022. He made it through 15 games for the Browns in 2023 before hurting his hamstring again.

SIDENOTE: I do wish kickers and QBs would stop trying to act like football players and make tackles. That’s how Baker Mayfield hurt his shoulder with the Browns in 2021. Hopkins was chasing a return man when he pulled his hamstring. Anyway, Hopkins is back … and so is Cade York, the kicker he replaced.

The fact that York was cut by Cleveland, and then by the Giants and Titans doesn’t bother me. Phil Dawson was cut three times before finally making the Browns in 1999.Hopkins was cut by Buffalo, New Orleans and Washington during his career. Most kickers – even good ones – are cut at least once early in their careers.

York is there for protection on the practice squad, and maybe he’ll figure it out.
