ATENEARS
Not sure what this is about, but I found this on facebook. It shows the stadium grass surface being stripped. Not sure what is in store, as there is no story behind it. Why is it that everytime we get a new GM or Head Coach, they start by tearing up either the stadium surface or the Berea practice surfaces or both? sisky fringo
maybe it's normal maintenance on ours, gets packed too tight or something, or something with the heating units or however it works. or maybe they're just padding it a little so our QB can get us through the season. the purest in me hopes they stick with grass no matter what, to slow down fast teams and to give everyone badges of honor on their jerseys in general. actually ideally they'd wear brown and orange jerseys with brown pants reg season and all whites in the playoffs, so whatever. but that's just me. today. who know's how i'll feel tomorrow. if there's a turf that players and coaches like, that can mimic grass and not have divots, holds together well and maybe even make it a little bit softer to land on without making it spongy...who the hell am i to stand in their way. The Gipper
Turf actually means grass, but over the years has been shortened from Artificial Turf to just turf, hence people thinking turf means the synthetic stuff. Note that I don't think that anyone still uses the old "Astroturf" stuff. I looked up one poll of NFL players which said that the best stadium turfs were: #1 Arizona 2. Tampa The worst fields were: #1 Pittsburgh #2 Oakland That is just the field. However, one site, Fanfare rated the stadiums of the NFL played in last year. I will give you the list here, but you have to take their reasoning for these ratings with a complete grain of salt. You will see when I note some of the comments. In fact, I think some complete morons must have been doing these ratings (31 stadiums because of shared Jets/Giants): 31. St. Louis Edward Jones Dome...didn't like domes 30. Atlanta Georgia Dome..didn't like domes 29. Washington FedEx Field 28. New Orleans Superdome..didn't like domes 27. Jacksonville Municipal Stadium 26. Cleveland Browns Stadium....said they rated it low "because it had too much security"?? 25. Kansas City Arrowhead 24. Miami Dolphins Stadium 23. Oakland Alameda County Coliseum 22. Buffalo Ralph Wilson Stadium 21. Detroit Ford Field 20. Seattle Qwest 19. Arizona Univ. of Phoenix Stad. 18. San Diego Quallcomm Field 17. Baltimore Ravens Stadium...didn't like it because there wasn't much else to do there but watch the football game.!!?? 16. Tennesse Titans Stadium 15. Minnesota Metrodome 14. Philadelphia Lincoln Field 13. Denver New Mile High Stad. 12. Chicago Soldier Field 11. New England Gillete Stadium 10. San Francisco Candlestick Park 9. Carolina Panther stadium 8. Pittsburgh Heinz Field...liked it because the Steelers have sold out a lot of consecutive games!!?? 7. Giants Stadium....the old stadium, not the new one opening? 6. Green Bay Lambeau Field 5. Houston Reliant Stadium 4. Tampa Bay Raymond James Stadium 3. Cincinnatti Paul Brown stadium. Liked it because they had on the scoreboard an animated Tiger slashing through their opponents name and people cheered for that!!?? 2. Dallas Cowboy Dome....liked it because it was a new dome!! 1. Indianapolis....liked it because it was a new dome!! Note that they rated some older domes the worst because they didn't like Domes. But they put about the worst dome, the Metrodome about midway on their rankings, and rated the new domes the best because they like new domes!!?? ballpeen
It's all subjective.....CBS is nicer than Titans stadium, and I am not being a homer here.... I still think we needed a dome in Cleveland. First: It's goofy to sit outside when it is freezing cold. Second: Outdoors actually diminishes our home field advantage....CBS doesn't hold sound all that well with gaps in the west end. Third: Outdoors in the cold doesn't give any advantage except to the crappy team. Most players on the team didn't grow up anywhere near Cleveland nor played college ball anywhere near Cleveland. As we get better, outdoors in December will only play against us. Fourth: We won't even get in to the economic advantages a indoor facility has over a outdoor facility. Some events won't even consider a outdoor facility while VERY few would shun a indoor facility. With a retractable dome, we could still maintain a natural surface. We have steam lines installed 2-3 feet below the surface that could melt off any snow by the time the dome was closed on Thursday and the game on Sunday.. Sure, I am southernized, but people are kidding themselves if they say they would rather sit in the wind and 15 degree temperature's over sitting in a 70 degree maintained facility......keep it at 50 if you insist on wearing a sweatshirt....I am good with that as a compromise. back to my point on equalizing the field.....it helps the underdog more than anyone else. If you always plan on being a underdog, then yeah, tell me I am crazy. We need a roof on the stadium IMO....and I know some will disagree, but I have laid out the reality above. The Gipper
What we need and what we want are two different things. That's the reality. Do we need a dome, sure. Do we want a dome, not so much. It all came down to money, and to a lesser extent, choice. We didn't want the old indoor/astroturf type dome, like the Metrodome or Silverdome, plus the money for that kind of dome wasn't there. And, in 1997-1999 when CBS was being buile the techology for a retractable dome was not yet perfected. (The only one being around was the Skydome in Toronto) Within a few years, yes, they started building retractable domes, like in Detroit, Houston, Seattle, plus in a number of baseball stadiums. It would have been nice to have had one of those but we were a day late (or early in this case) and a dollar short.

They couldn't find anything bad to say so they picked that to drop us down. Lord know's we cant have Cleveland at the top of any list. They even rate one stadium low for the same reason they rate other's high. It doesn't make sense. It's like they had a different person go to every stadium and write about it while trying to play it off like the same person went to each one.
